In April 2019, City Council approved ConnectEdmonton: Strategic Plan 2019 - 2028 which replaced The Way Ahead 2009 – 2018.

The Way Ahead 2009 – 2018 was the strategic plan for the City of Edmonton’s work in serving the citizens of Edmonton. It was instrumental in changing the City’s role from a utility provider to a service provider, focusing on improving the quality of life for Edmontonians.

Edmonton’s livability and quality of life continue to improve, and what we learned on The Way Ahead journey will continue to have an impact on Edmontonians.

The Way Ahead provided direction to understand and meet evolving citizen demands for new and enhanced services, and an emphasis on building and developing modern infrastructure and facilities.

The six directional plans (The Ways) supported the development of Edmonton’s downtown core, built new communities and facilities, and the neighbourhood renewal program.
Edmonton today is very different from the Edmonton of 2009. Delivering the most responsive and effective services to Edmontonians remain at the heart of what the City is doing, and will continue to do.

Edmonton has come to mean a community where it makes sense to plan our future together. ConnectEdmonton: Strategic Plan 2019 - 2028 sets the direction for Edmonton’s future. It is about transformational change and recognizes the city’s heart is our people. They make everything possible.

The Final Report

Council’s Strategic Plan, The Way Ahead 2009 - 2018, made a significant impact for Edmontonians and it changed how the City of Edmonton provides services daily for citizens.

The final report 2017 is the fourth and final annual update for The Way Ahead, which tracks Administration's achievement of Council's vision and goals over the past 10 years.

Our results are based on regular, consistent and timely measurement. This includes engagement with Edmontonians, partners and stakeholders. By ensuring multiple perspectives are reflected in our assessments, we obtain a better understanding of the effectiveness of our work.

City Council and the City of Edmonton share the desire to enable a better life for every Edmontonian. Through our 2017 final report, residents, businesses, community partners and city-builders of all types can witness what we have achieved.
