Fire Investigations

Any fire or explosion that results in property damage, injury, or death will be thoroughly investigated by the fire investigations team to determine the origin, cause and circumstances of in the fire. When required, Fire Investigators will consult experts from other city departments, government agencies and private organizations to determine the cause of fires.

Some of the duties performed by the Fire Investigators include:

  • Examining and photographing the area of the fire, preserving valuable evidence
  • Using their specifically trained dog to search the fire scene for the presence of accelerants (including materials such as gasoline, alcohols, paint thinner)
  • Interviewing building owners and occupants, witnesses and responding rescue crews for any information relating to the fire
  • Work with Emergency Support Response Team (ESRT) to assist displaced persons or families
  • Liaise with Insurance Adjusters

Each incident that the team responds to is assigned an incident number, and is detailed in a report that can highlight recurring problems.
