The Blatchford Renewable Energy Utility has been established to help achieve the City of Edmonton’s long term goal of 100% renewable energy and carbon neutrality for the Blatchford community.

The Blatchford Utility will own and operate the District Energy Sharing System (DESS) to provide heating, cooling and domestic hot water services. The DESS will deliver energy efficiently from a centralized source using ambient (room temperature) water that is then upgraded by heat pumps which provide both heating and cooling. The DESS will tie into renewable energy sources including geo-exchange and sewer heat recovery to obtain low-temperature energy.

The Blatchford Utility operates as a municipal owned utility under the Blatchford District Energy Utility Fiscal Policy C597 and the Blatchford Renewable Energy Utility Bylaw 17943. The budget for the Blatchford Utility reflects the strategic direction and initiatives identified in the 2019-2022 Blatchford Renewable Energy Utility Business Plan presented to Utility Committee on June 8, 2018.
