Approved 2013 Operating Budget
(as of December 11, 2012)

The City of Edmonton’s Operating Budget pays for the “operations” of civic services and programs. This includes the budget to pay staff for services such as transit, fire rescue, and police, as well as the gas that powers their fleet; for the lifeguards at pools and the cost to heat the water; and to pay for the tradespeople and the road materials to fix potholes. This budget pays for all the civic services Edmontonians see and use every day.

The Approved 2013 Operating Budget of $1.94 billion requires an overall increase of 3.33% in municipal property taxes – 2.33% for civic services and 1% to continue the Neighbourhood Renewal Program.

The Executive Summary of the Approved 2013 Operating Budget summarizes costs, distribution of taxes and strategies for balancing the budget.

Municipalities are not allowed to plan an operating deficit or budget for a surplus. The City only collects enough taxes to pay for budgeted services and programs as identified by the 2013 Revenue and Expenditures for tax-supported operations.

The impact of the Approved 2013 Operating Budget on a typical Edmonton household valued at $364,000 would be an increase of $119 for the year or $9.92 a month, for an average annual bill of $1,924.
