Edmonton's Zoning Bylaw regulates bicycle parking and the type of racks used.

When a new commercial, industrial or residential project over 20 units is proposed, or an existing development is substantially changed, bicycle parking is required.

Design Standards

The bicycle rack must allow

  • Bicycles to be securely locked without inconvenience.
  • Locking both the frame and wheels to the rack with a U-shaped lock if the cyclist removes the front wheel.
  • Locking the frame and one wheel to the rack with a U-shaped lock if the cyclist leaves both wheels on the bike.
  • Locking the frame and wheels to the rack with a chain or cable less than 2m long, without removing wheels.
  • The bicycle rack must be anchored securely to a hard surface or a fixed structure.
  • Bicycles are securely supported by the frame so that the bicycle cannot fall or be pushed over.

Number of bicycle parking spaces required

Minimum of 5 spaces and a maximum of 50 spaces.

Within the downtown area redevelopment plan boundary: non-residential and residential premises with more than 20 living units must provide bicycle parking equivalent to 20% of vehicular parking requirement.

Outside of the downtown area redevelopment plan boundary: non-residential and residential premises with more than 20 living units must provide bicycle parking equivalent to 5% of vehicular parking requirement.

Administration use and educational facilities must provide bicycle parking equivalent to 10% of vehicular parking requirement.

Location of bicycle parking spaces

Bicycle parking should be clearly visible so as to discourage theft and vandalism. Bicycle parking spaces must be visible and located in:

  • Inside the building.
  • In an accessory parking area.
  • Within a yard or building setback on the site, but not more than 15m from the main entrance to the building.

If the bicycle parking is not easily visible a sign must direct the public to its location.

Minimum dimensions of bicycle parking spaces

  • Width 0.6m
  • Length 1.8m
  • Overhead clearance 2m
  • Aisle width 1.5m
  • Separated from vehicle parking spaces by 1.5m or a physical barrier
