Gas Permit Requirements

A Gas Permit is required by the Alberta Safety Codes Act when installing or relocating any gas equipment, including:

  • Propane installations
  • Piping and gas lines
  • Boilers (hydronic)
  • Make up air units
  • Fireplaces
  • Furnaces (and rooftop units)
  • Gas pumps
  • Kitchen equipment
  • Meters

New Gas Lines

Before a gas meter can be installed, the new gas line requires an approved inspection.

Primary Gas Lines

A primary gas line cannot be located under an accessory building.

Shut Off Gas Line

Before the gas service is restored to an existing gas line that had been shut off for 6 or more months, a licensed and bonded contractor must do a pressure test on the line.

The contractor will then request an inspection from the City plumbing and gas inspector who must approve the job.

The City plumbing and gas inspector will then advise ATCO of the inspection approval. At this stage, the customer is required to contact ATCO to send out a technician who will put the gas line into service.

After the work is completed an inspection by the City is required.

All concealed equipment must be inspected and approved before covering.

If the work has not had an inspection but has been covered, the inspector has the authority to re-open the area for inspection.

Extra Inspections

Additional fees shall be assessed for every inspection requested where any of the following items are found to be deficient:

  • No address on site, building, or suite as applicable
  • Inspector unable to access the building
  • Project not ready for inspection
  • A previously identified deficiency has not been corrected
