About the Project

During the Strategy phase of the project in 2016 and 2017, input on the public realm improvements component was gathered from residents, business owners and other stakeholders. This input shaped the creation of a concept plan. The proposed project area is within city road right of way and includes:

  • Sidewalk widening to 2m (where possible) and the construction of curb extensions as part of Newton Neighbourhood Renewal
  • Black standard streetlight poles and pedestrian poles
  • Planting beds along both sides of 54 Street alongside St. Leo Catholic School and Newton Centre and within the curb extensions

Roadway Enhancements

Public Realm Enhancements

The concept plan was presented to the public at the Newton Neighbourhood Renewal  Meeting Two in March 2017 and the public was invited to provide feedback. Additionally, the concept plan was posted online and included a survey to collect feedback.

A What We Heard document that summarizes the feedback received and provides responses will be available soon. It will also be emailed out to all who provided their email addresses for future communications about the project at the end of the survey.

Timeline

The Newton Corner Store Public Realm Improvements will be delivered as part of Neighbourhood Renewal construction in the area. With the change in Neighbourhood Renewal construction staging, these public realm improvements will be constructed in 2019.

Background

Capital infrastructure improvements are one of the five elements of the Corner Store Pilot Program, which aims to re-establish the neighbourhood shopping centre as a hub of community activity through improvements to City infrastructure, the buildings and the businesses within.

These improvements involve consultation with community leagues, business owners, property owners and City planners to establish area needs and wishes that will inform the final design.
