About the Project

The goal of this project is to improve the function and aesthetic of the commercial centre and encourage community access and use. The approach associated with this project is to make the public space surrounding the commercial space more inviting - by increasing the perception of safety, connect the business and community with amenable, attractive infrastructure and pedestrian-oriented landscaping.

This project is specific to the public realm enhancements in Calder focused on improvements to the City owned land along 129 Avenue, between 119 Street and 120 Street.

This project will develop and deliver streetscape enhancements in the public realm (City owned) area. The streetscaping infrastructure enhancements are intended to provide small and functional elements that contribute to area beautification and connectivity to the local community.

Public Engagement

Strategy Phase

Engagement was conducted through a survey and a ‘conversation cafe’. This helped to define priorities for enhancements, including:

  • Improved pedestrian safety
  • Increased lighting
  • Integration of seating
  • Integration of decorative features
  • Coordinate enhancement of existing bus shelter

Concept Phase

A Public Engagement Session was held on May 1, 2018 at the Calder Community Hall. Participants were invited to engage in design review through a survey and conversation. The intent was to gain stakeholder perspective, insight and preferences to help refine the plans for streetscape enhancement.

Design Phase

Engagement is anticipated for late July/early August 2018. The Preliminary Design will be made available on this project webpage. A link to an online survey will be provided to gather feedback. This will be the final opportunity for public to advise on the project. Information and updates will be shared via this webpage through the project duration.

Concept Plan

The Concept Plan was updated following assessment of the public feedback as well as an internal review.

The Concept Plan becomes the basis for design and will be adapted based on cost estimates, technical review and input from public engagement.

About the Corner Store Program

The Corner Store Program was identified as a way to focus specific reinvestment into local neighbourhood commercial areas. Upgrading streetscaping and building facades along with working directly with the local business, community members and property owners to address specific business needs could act as a catalyst to spur business revival and increase potential for sustained local economic development.

The Corner Store Pilot began in 2015 with a vision to enhance the commercial centres in selected neighbourhoods. Key elements of the program include:

  • Retail market analysis
  • Commercial centre physical improvements
  • Public realm enhancements
  • Strategic planning and marketing assistance
  • Business support

The outcomes expected from a successful program include strengthening the business commercial viability of the area, connecting commercial small business services to community needs, improved opportunities for walkability to local amenities and contributing to the overall economic development of the area.
