This Labour Day weekend, Edmonton will play host to some of the world's most elite athletes as they take centre stage for Race Week. Race Week features not one, but two fantastic international sporting events: Tour of Alberta and ITU World Triathlon

Edmonton is the final stop in the ITU World Triathlon Series before the Grand Final in Cozumel. Finishing in Edmonton, the Tour of Alberta is Canada's first and highest ranked professional road cycling stage race. 

Road Closures & Traffic Delays

A number of road closures will be in effect from Friday September 2 to Monday September 5 to ensure the safety of competitors, volunteers and spectators. Major travel delays can be expected. Motorists are urged to plan ahead. Use Whitemud Drive, Anthony Henday Drive, Low Level Bridge, 97 Avenue and 107 Street as alternate routes. 

Saturday September 3

6am-11:30am:

  • Groat Road, from 87 Avenue to 107 Avenue
  • Emily Murphy Park Road, from Saskatchewan Drive to Hawrelak Park
  • Saskatchewan Drive, from 87 Avenue to 116 Street
10:45am-5pm:
  • Groat Road, from 87 Avenue to Victoria Park Road
  • Groat Road northbound, from Victoria Park Road to 107 Avenue
  • Victoria Park Road, from 100 Avenue to Groat Road
  • Emily Murphy Park Road, from Saskatchewan Drive to Hawrelak Park

Sunday September 4

Transit Detours & Bus Stop Closures

Some ETS bus detours will take place during the event and some bus stops will be temporarily relocated. 

On Saturday September 3 and Sunday September 4, routes 128 and 130 will be detoured as required.

Monday September 5 is a statutory holiday, and therefore will operate on a Sunday service schedule. From 8am-5:30pm, the following routes will be affected: 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 15, 57, 86, 100, 130, 140 and 151. Please plan ahead, as major delays can be expected.

LRT service will not be affected.

Free ETS Shuttle Service

Free shuttle service will be available to and from Hawrelak Park. There will be a single shuttle circuit running between Hawrelak Park and Windsor Car Park (116 Street and 92 Avenue), which will also stop at 116 Street and 87 Avenue to pick up and drop off passengers.

The closest stops to our complimentary shuttle service are Health Sciences/Jubilee Station or University Station. 

Paid spectator parking is available at the University of Alberta's Windsor, Stadium and Education Car Parks. 

Friday September 2

From 2pm-9pm, buses will run on a 10 minute service frequency from Windsor Car Park (116 Street and 92 Avenue) to the drop-off  point outside of the Hawrelak Park entrance.

Saturday September 3

Buses will run on a 10 minute service frequency from Windsor Car Park (116 Street and 92 Avenue) to Hawrelak Park starting at 5:30am. This shuttle will also stop at 116 Street and 87 Avenue to pick up and drop off passengers. The last departure from Hawrelak Park back to Windsor Car Park will be 7:30pm.

Sunday September 4*

Buses will run on a 10 minute service frequency from Windsor Car Park (116 Street and 92 Avenue) to Hawrelak Park starting at 5:30am. This shuttle will also stop at 116 Street and 87 Avenue to pick up and drop off passengers. The last departure from Hawrelak Park back to Windsor Car Park will be at 8:30pm.*

*NOTE: On Sunday September 4 from 12pm-1pm, and from 2pm-3pm, due to restrictions on the roadways around Hawrelak Park during the Elite races, shuttles will drop off passengers at the traffic circle at the corner of Groat Road and 87 Avenue.

Buses Replace LRT North of Coliseum

LRT service north of Coliseum station will be suspended from September 3–5 for planned track work. Capital Line trains will still pull into Coliseum station. Shuttle buses marked “LRT Replacement” will provide service between Clareview, Belvedere, Coliseum LRT stations approximately every 7–8 minutes.

Victoria Golf Course Access

If you're visiting the Victoria Golf Course & Driving Range over the Labour Day weekend, please be aware of access limitations:

Saturday September 3:

Access is available via River Valley Road westbound and Groat Road southbound.

Sunday September 4:

Access to the golf course will be by shuttle only. Free shuttles will be leaving from the Edmonton Ballpark west parking lot (96 Avenue between 104 Avenue and Rossdale Road) every 30 minutes from 6:30am-3:30pm, and 8pm-10:20pm, and every 20 minutes from 4pm-8pm.

Monday September 5:

River Valley Road will be closed to general traffic from 5am-7pm. However, traffic to and from the golf course will be permitted through a single access point.

  • 5am-1:30pm - Access to the golf course during this time will be available from 105 Street and River Valley Road only.
  • 1:30pm-7pm - Access to the golf course will be via northbound Groat Road only, and access from the course will be via southbound Groat Road only.

Please leave extra time to arrive at the golf course during these times, as automobile traffic may be temporarily stopped to allow cyclists through.

Parking Restrictions

Parking is not available at Hawrelak Park. Paid spectator parking is available at the University of Alberta's Windsor, Stadium and Education Car Parks. Parking is not permitted on the race course from 5am-6pm on race day. A number of meters will be hooded. Please obey all signs, as illegally parked vehicles will be tagged and towed.

Bicycles

Why not ride your bike to Hawrelak Park? Public bike racks will be set up in the park. Spectators can stay in the park to watch the action, or venture out on the bicycle and running course to get a closer look at their favorite triathletes.

Taxis & Private Shuttles

Due to the event road closures, all taxis and private shuttles will drop off and pick up from the Northern Alberta Jubilee north ground parking lot near 87 Avenue and 115 Street. All guests may transfer to the Health Sciences LRT Station Circuit to access Hawrelak Park.

Park Access

William Hawrelak Park

William Hawrelak Park will be closed to vehicles from 4pm on Friday September 2 to the end of the day on Sunday September 4.

Please note that access will be restricted the night prior, preventing early morning access.

Emily Murphy Park

Due to road closures there will be limited or no access into or out of Emily Murphy Park (including the boat launch) on the following dates and times:

  • Saturday September 3, from 6am-6:45pm
  • Sunday September 4, from 6am-6:15pm
Please note that access will be restricted the night prior, preventing early morning access.

Government House Park

Due to road closures there will be limited or no access into or out of Government House Park on the following dates and times:

  • Saturday September 3, from 6am-6:45pm
  • Sunday September 4, from 6am-6:15pm

Please note that access will be restricted the night prior, preventing early morning access.

Royal Glenora Club

  • Sunday September 4, from 4:30pm-8:30pm, access to the Royal Glenora Club is via Fort Way Road.
  • Monday September 5, from 5am-12:30pm, access to the Royal Glenora Club is via 105 Street.

Victoria Park

Access to the Victoria Park parking area will be restricted during the following times:

  • Sunday September 4, from 7am-8pm
  • Monday September 5, from 5am–6pm

Please note that access will be restricted the night prior, preventing early morning parking.
