ITU World Triathlon Edmonton

The eyes of the world will be on Edmonton on July 28 and 29, 2017, as the ITU World Triathlon Edmonton comes to William Hawrelak Park. This highly prestigious, international event will feature world-class athletes from around the globe.

ITU Triathlon Festival

Come for the race and stay for the party! Take a walk through the sports expo, choose from a variety of tasty food vendors, and quench your thirst in the kid-friendly beer gardens. Admission is free!

Best Places to Watch

There are more than 12 exhilarating events to watch over 2 spectacular days of racing. Check the schedule for race times. Spectators can stay in the park and cheer on the athletes from the comfort of the grandstand, or venture out on the bicycle and running course to get a closer look at their favourite triathletes.

Road Closures and Traffic Delays

A number of road closures will be in effect from Friday July 28 to Saturday July 29 to ensure the safety of competitors, volunteers and spectators. Motorists are urged to plan ahead to avoid driving delays.

Major travel delays can be expected in areas southwest of Downtown and the University of Alberta. Use Whitemud Drive, Anthony Henday Drive, Low Level Bridge, James Macdonald Bridge and 107 Avenue as alternate routes.

Friday July 28, from 2:30pm–8pm

  • Emily Murphy Park Road and Mayfair overpass, from Saskatchewan Drive to Hawrelak Park
  • Saskatchewan Drive, from 110 Street to 116 Street
  • 111 Street, from  90 Avenue to Saskatchewan Drive

  • 90 Avenue, from 110 Street to 111 Street

Saturday July 29 from 5am–​Noon

  • Groat Road, from 87 Avenue to 107 Avenue
  • Emily Murphy Park Road, from Saskatchewan Drive to Hawrelak Park
  • Saskatchewan Drive, from 87 Avenue to 116 Street
  • 116 Street, from Edinboro Road to Saskatchewan Drive

Saturday July 29 from Noon–4:30pm

  • Emily Murphy Park Road, from Saskatchewan Drive to Hawrelak Park
  • 116 Street, from Edinboro Road to Saskatchewan Drive
  • 118 Street, from Edinboro Road to Saskatchewan Drive
  • Edinboro Road, from 116 Street to 118 Street

Free ETS Shuttle Service

Free shuttle service will be available to and from Hawrelak Park during the ITU World Triathlon Edmonton. There will be a single shuttle circuit running between Windsor Car Park (116 Street and 92 Avenue), which will also stop at 116 Street and 87 Avenue to pick up and drop off passengers.

The closest LRT stops to the complimentary shuttle service are Health Sciences/Jubilee Station or University Stations.

Paid spectator parking is available at the University of Alberta's Windsor, Stadium and Education Car Parks.

Friday July 28
Shuttle buses will run approximately every 10 minutes from Windsor Car Park (116 Street and 92 Avenue) to Hawrelak Park starting at 7:30am. Pick-up and drop-off is also available at bus stop #2666 on the south side of 87 Avenue, west of 116 Street. The last departure from Hawrelak Park to Windsor Car Park will be approximately 9pm.

Saturday July 29
Shuttle buses will run approximately every 10 minutes from Windsor Car Park (116 Street and 92 Avenue) starting at 5am. Courtesy stops will also be in the area of 87 Avenue, west of 116 Street. Pick-up is on the north side of 87 Avenue (bus stop #2851) and drop-off is on the south side of 87 Avenue (bus stop #2666). The last departure from Hawrelak Park back to Windsor Car Park will be approximately 5:30pm.

ETS Bus Detours

Route 128 and 130 will detour on July 28 and 29.

Parking

Parking is not available at Hawrelak Park. Paid spectator parking is available at the University of Alberta's Windsor, Stadium and Education Car Parks. Parking is not permitted on the course. A number of meters will be hooded. Please obey all signs, as illegally parked vehicles will be tagged and towed.

Bicycles

Why not ride your bike to Hawrelak Park? Public bike racks will be set up in the park. Spectators can stay in the park to watch the action, or venture out on the bicycle and running course to get a closer look at their favourite triathletes.

Taxis and Private Shuttles

Due to the event road closures, all taxis and private shuttles will drop off and pick up from the Northern Alberta Jubilee north ground parking lot near 87 Avenue and 115 Street. All guests may transfer to the Health Sciences LRT Station Circuit to access Hawrelak Park.

Park Access

William Hawrelak Park

William Hawrelak Park will be closed to vehicles from 4pm on Friday July 28 to the end of the day on Saturday July 29.

Emily Murphy Park

Due to road closures, there will be limited or no access into or out of Emily Murphy Park ​(including the boat launch)​​​ on the following dates and times: ​

  • Friday July 28, from 2–8pm
  • Saturday July 29, from 5am–4:30pm

Government House Park

Due to road closures, there will be limited or no access into or out of Government House Park on the following dates and times:

  • Saturday July 29, from 6am–12pm

Please note that access will be restricted the night prior, preventing early morning access.​

Victoria Golf Course Access

If you're visiting Victoria Golf Course and Driving Range on Saturday July 29, please be aware that access to River Valley Road will be available via 105 Street or Victoria Park Road only.

Queen's Baton Relay

The Queen's Baton Relay, which is travelling to all Commonwealth nations and territories leading up to the 2018 Games in  Australia, will make a stop at Hawrelak Park on Saturday July 29 from 2–2:45pm. Meet 1978 Olympic gold medal athletes Graham Smith and Diane Jones-Konihowshki. Hold the Baton and take photos with it. Then share your photos and follow the Baton's adventures using the hashtag #QBR2018.
