Boardwalk Sand on Whyte

Dates: June 28 to July 7
Hours: 10am - 10pm
Location: CP rail lands north of 82 Avenue (Whyte Avenue) between 102 and 103 Street (Gateway Blvd.)
Admission: By donation

Discover the beauty and range of emotions as you explore sand sculptures created by professional sand carving artists. 

Found Festival

Dates: July 4 to 7
Hours: Found Festival Schedule
Location: Main festival site is the Backstage Theatre & alley (84 Avenue, between 103 Street & 104 Street) with locations throughout Old Strathcona. See Found Festival Map
Admission: Free

Edmonton’s only found space arts festival brings the arts out of galleries and concert halls and into the community. Find art in unexpected places in the heart of Old Strathcona!

Whyte Avenue Art Walk

Dates: July 5 to 7 
Hours: 10am - 5pm 
Location: Whyte Ave (82 Avenue) sidewalks from 101 Street to 108 Street, 81 Avenue road between 104 Street (Calgary Trail) and 105 Street and several other roadway and parkland locations throughout Strathcona
Admission: Free

Over 400 visual artists will bring their art supplies and artworks into the streets to create an outdoor studio and gallery spanning 4km. There’s a lot of art to enjoy, so bring your walking shoes and get ready to curate your own art collection!

35th Edmonton International Street Performers Festival

Dates: July 5 to 14
Hours: 11:30am-11pm daily (except Sunday July 14, 11:30am-5:30pm)
Location: Dr. Wilbert McIntyre Park, 8303 104 Street, between 103 Street (Gateway Blvd.) and 104 Street (Calgary Trail) along with surrounding roadways
Admission: By donation

Enjoy incredible acts from Canada and around the globe as the park is transformed into the ultimate playground. Professional street acts, jugglers, magicians, circus performers, comedians, dancers and hula hoopers from around the world are sure to entertain the young and the young at heart.

Rachel Notley’s Annual Pancake Breakfast

Date: July 6
Time: 9-11am
New Location: 81 Avenue, west of 104 Street (beside The Pint Whyte)
Admission: Free

MLA Rachel Notley will host a free pancake breakfast street party in partnership with the Whyte Avenue Art Walk, Boardwalk Sand on Whyte, and The Pint Whyte. Take part in this unique opportunity to hear from and mingle with the MLA, connect with people and enjoy artist displays in the Strathcona constituency.

Twinfest Parade & Festival

Date: July 13 
Times: Parade starts at 11am; Festival: 10am-6pm
Parade Route: Starting at Tipton Arena (10828 80 Avenue), the parade will travel westbound on 81 Avenue to 109 Street. It will travel north on 109 Street to 82 Avenue, where it will turn east and travels to 103 Street (Gateway Blvd). From there the parade will travel north to Tommy Banks Way and turn east to enter End of Steel Park via the multi use trail.

Admission: Free

The old saying “the more the merrier” comes to life, as twins, triplets and multiples of all denominations and ages celebrate their multipleness. The theme for the 2019 Twinfest Parade is Northern Lights.

Getting There

There’s a lot going on in this vibrant community, which will require a number of road closures to be in effect. Be sure to plan your trip ahead of time.


Limited parking is available. Please obey all signage, as tag and tow will be in effect. 


Why not avoid any traffic congestion and take transit instead? Use the ETS Trip Planner or call 311 for route and schedule information. 

Bus Route 4 travelling between Bonnie Doon Shopping Centre and the University Transit Station will increase in frequency on July 6 and 7. 

Bus Stop Closures

Please note: From July 4-15 the bus stop on the 104 Street service lane, between 81 Avenue and 85 Avenue, will be detoured.


The University, Health Sciences/Jubilee and McKernan/Belgravia LRT Stations are an approximately 15 minute walk to Old Strathcona. Connecting buses from the from LRT Stations to Whyte Avenue are available. Use the ETS Trip Planner or call 311 for details.

Bike Lanes

Cycling around Old Strathcona is a breeze using the City’s new bike lanes. Bike lockups are available on Whyte Avenue and in the surrounding area, as well as next to the Strathcona Public Library.

Bike Lane Closure
Please note: From July 4-15 the bike lane on 83 Avenue, from Gateway Boulevard (103 Street) to Calgary Trail (104 Street) will be temporarily closed. Please obey all signage and dismount where required. 

High Level Street Car

Jump on the High Level Street Car for a bit of history on your way to Old Strathcona. Find stop, fare and schedule information on the Edmonton Radial Railway site.

Road Closures

The following road closures will be in effect daily from July 5-7, from 6am to 7pm:

  • 81 Avenue, from 104 Street to 105 Street
  • 102 Street, from 82 Avenue to 83 Avenue
  • 102 Street, from 82 Avenue south to the alley
  • Single lane closure of the 103 Street right turning lane, from 81 Avenue to 82 Avenue
  • Closure of Parking Lot 5013 off of 103 Street from 82 to 83 Avenue
  • 104 Street service lane, from 81 Avenue to 82 Avenue
  • 105 Street, from 81 Avenue to 82 Avenue
  • 105 Street, from 82 Avenue to 83 Avenue

Note: North and south sidewalks along Whyte Avenue, between 100 Street and 109 Street have been licensed to the Whyte Avenue Art Walk.

The following road closures will be in effect from July 4-15 for the Edmonton International Street Performers Festival:

  • 83 Avenue, from 103 Street to 104 Street
  • 84 Avenue, from 104 Street east to the alley
  • Single lane closure on 103 Street, from 82 Avenue to 84 Avenue
  • 104 Street service lane, from 82 Avenue to 85 Avenue
  • Alley between 103 Street and 104 Street, from 83 Avenue to 84 Avenue
