Fun Facts About Komodo Dragons

  • They have a venomous bite and their saliva contains more than 50 different strains of bacteria
  • Komodo dragons are the largest lizards on Earth
  • They are found only in the lesser Sunda region of the Indonesian Islands
  • Despite their size, Komodo dragons can run 18-19 kilometers per hour in short bursts
  • They are at the top of the food chain as there are no large mammals on the islands where they live
  • The female will lay up to 30 eggs in the early fall to avoid the hottest season and will bury them in the earth
  • Komodos will dig a den of sorts to escape the heat of the day and shelter in at night or during rains
  • They can eat 80% of their body weight at one feeding and 10% of their diet is young Komodo Dragons
  • They are listed as endangered on the CITES list due to prey depletion, human encroachment on their habitat, and poaching

Make the Most Out of Your Komodo Experience

Consider these tips before seeing the Komodo Dragons:

  • The Komodos are located in the Saito Centre - to get to Saito Centre follow the Summer of the Dragon signs
  • We will ask guests who have strollers to park them outside of Saito Centre in our designated stroller parking area
  • The closest washroom is located in the reptile wing across from the leachie geckos
  • The Komodo Dragon Enclosure, Nocturnal Wing, Reptile Wing, and the washrooms in the Saito Centre will be closed every day at 5:30pm until close
  • On Tuesdays, the Komodo Dragon Enclosure, Nocturnal Wing, Reptile Wing, and the washrooms in the Saito Centre will be closed from 5:30-6:30pm
  • The Komodos will be fed at 10:15am every second Sunday starting on July 16, 2017
