We’re excited to announce that the City of Edmonton is moving indoors with Group Fitness Classes! They will be offered at 5 major Recreation Centres throughout Edmonton: Terwillegar, Commonwealth (Stadium), The Meadows, Clareview, and Kinsmen Sports Centre.

On September 20, Yoga, Living Fit and Step will all be held indoors. On Sept 28, all Group Fitness Programs will be held indoors except for Stadium Stairs.

  • Choreographed (Step, Zumba and Strong Nation)
  • Strength & Conditioning (Ignite, H.I.I.T., Stroller Fit, Tabata, Glute Camp, Cycle Blast, All Arms Burst, Cardio Burst and Core Challenge)
  • Family Friendly Classes (Ignite Family Friendly and Zumba Family Friendly)
  • Older Adult Classes (Living Fit)
  • Stair Climber (Located in the Commonwealth Stadium)

In order to ensure a safe and high-quality program, all classes require advanced registration.

Locations

Physical distancing will be in place at all times. All other AHS guidelines will be strictly followed.

Participants should not attend classes if any of the following is true:

  • Feeling ill and/or experiencing any of the following symptoms: cough, fever, shortness of breath, runny nose or sore throat as outlined in this document.
  • Experienced any of the above symptoms in the last 10 days
  • Within the last 14 days you have returned home from travel outside of Canada or been in contact with someone who has traveled outside of Canada and tested positive for COVID-19

Registration

  • Participants are required to pre-register for all indoor group fitness classes
  • Anyone that is not registered will not be allowed to participate
  • Participants must provide an email address when registering
  • Registration will be available until the start of class
  • Participants can register through MoveLearnPlay, at the Admissions desk in the Recreation Centres or by calling 311
  • Schedule is subject to change.

Cancellation Policy

  • Participants can cancel (remove their registration from a class), with no penalty, up to four hours prior to the start of the class time. Participants must call 311 to cancel their registration.
  • The City of Edmonton may cancel classes. Refunds will automatically be put on the participant’s City of Edmonton account in these instances.

Personal Protection

  • Participants should wash their hands prior to heading out to class and again as soon as possible following class
  • The use of individual antibacterial hand sanitizer that is at least 60% alcohol is recommended 
  • You are encouraged to bring your own alcohol-based sanitizer
  • Personal items should not be shared
  • Bring your own water bottle
  • A sweat towel is recommended to help avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with your hands
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or into your elbow when coughing or sneezing
  • Masks are required upon entrance into the facility and group fitness space.  The mask can be removed when everyone is safely distanced in their designated spot.
  • Participants will be distanced 3 meters or more apart from each other in all group fitness classes
  • Do not spit 
  • While we want to foster a positive environment and for you to encourage your fellow fitness classmates, please do not high-five them and ensure you are always respecting their personal space

Class Set-Up

  • Participants should bring their own yoga mat for all classes (except Zumba)
  • All Indoor Group Fitness programs will be held in large, well-ventilated spaces such as Gymnasiums, Fieldhouses and Flexi-Halls. At this time, studios will not be used for Group Fitness programs.
  • Fans will not be utilized as a safety precaution - please dress appropriately
  • Physical distancing must be adhered to while getting and putting equipment away, entrance into and out of the program spaces and in hallways. Masks are also mandatory at this time.
  • Group fitness Class times will be off-set from other Amenity start times to ensure shared spaces are not overloaded.
  • Participants must maintain physical distancing throughout the class. Designated spots will be predetermined to ensure AHS physical distance guidelines are met.
    • Individual ground stations will be spaced with a minimum of 3 meters between each other
    • Trainers/Instructors will remind and enforce social distancing in group activities not being performed at your individual station
  • There will be no communally handled equipment 
  • For Yoga classes, participants are encouraged to bring their own props (such as a strap and blocks)
  • Any non-personal equipment used will be sanitized by a City of Edmonton staff after each use
  • When arriving for class, please arrive a maximum of 10 minutes early
    • Upon arrival, check-in at the admissions desk to ensure you are registered for the class.
    • Find a spot and get yourself set-up; avoid clustering in groups
    • Please arrive early enough to ensure that class can start on time

How early should I arrive?

Please arrive early enough for class to start on time but no earlier than 15 minutes.

What do I need to bring?

Proof of registration (e-mail or printed copy), yoga mat or towel, hand sanitizer, sweat towel, appropriate clothing.

Can I register through 311?

Yes, registration is available online through MoveLearnPlay, the facility information desk, or by calling 311. 

Will there be hand sanitizer stations on site?

Yes, hand sanitizer with 60% alcohol or higher will be provided.

Will I have access to washrooms or change rooms?

You will have access to washrooms inside the facility.

What happens if there is a COVID-19 exposure while I am visiting?

In the unlikely event that this does happen, the City of Edmonton will work with Alberta Health Services to ensure all proper processes and protocols are followed.

What if I have a City of Edmonton Recreation Centre Membership?

All Group Fitness Classes are included in Recreation Centre Memberships.

My plans have changed. How do I cancel my class?

Please call 311 to cancel a class or email myaccount@edmonton.ca please be advised that this email will not be monitored on the weekend, so it may take a few days to receive a response.

What is the City doing to ensure the AHS’s guidelines are followed for COVID-19 precautions?

Each instructor will have a COVID-19 update in their First Aid training in the case of an emergency. They will also have hand sanitizer and other PPE on site. The instructors will ensure everyone is practicing physical distancing at all times.

Will equipment be used for classes?

Equipment that is easy to clean may be used for classes. Equipment that is used will not be shared during a class and will be thoroughly cleaned between classes. Porous equipment, such as Yoga bolsters and foam Yoga blocks, will not be used. Participants should bring their own Yoga mats. 

Will participants be required to wear a mask?

Masks or face coverings are required when not engaging in exercise or athletic activities. Masks/face coverings will be required when entering the facility up until the start of class and upon completion of class until leaving the facility.
