Commonwealth Community Recreation Centre is fully accessible. It incorporates elements and standards where possible from the Americans with Disabilities Act and the City of Edmonton's Checklist for Accessibility and Universal Design in Architecture.

Accessibility for the facility includes but is not limited to the following features:

  • Barrier free change rooms, dressing rooms, and washrooms equipped with doors that swing outward, inside door handle to pull door shut, and hooks at accessible heights
  • Barrier free showers are equipped with benches and shower heads at accessible heights
  • Elevators and lifts to assist with accessing the various levels in the facility
  • Elevators are clearly identified on the signage at the entrances of the facility
  • Ramp entries into the main pool and whirlpool
  • Contrasting colour strips on the ramps into the main pool and whirlpool to indicate beginning and end of the ramp
  • Colour and texture contrast on all stair nosing
  • Colour contrast between floors and walls, doors and frames, cabinetry, railings and countertops
  • Contrasting pattern has been applied to all interior glazing to create visual transition
  • Benches both interior and exterior have rails or design solutions to facilitate easier transfers
  • Dispensers and hand dryers have been located to maximize ease of use
  • Colour contrasting interior way-finding signage with Braille, with symbol form for those with visual processing difficulties or who are unable to read.  Signage also has raised tactile lettering
  • Railings have been provided throughout the facility on ramps and stairs
  • No slip entry ways
  • 2 dedicated barrier free change rooms in the family pool change room, one with floor mounted swing lift and table'
  • Drinking fountains at accessible heights
  • One accessible section of the information desk to serve the public
  • Shelving, coat hooks and light switches installed at accessible heights
  • Spaces for persons using wheelchairs for scooters to sit/park in all public viewing areas
  • Alarm signals have an audible and visual signal
  • Designated accessible parking spaces located closest to the main entries
  • Barrier free path of travel from parking area to building entrances
  • Accessible parking signage posted
  • Entrance doors are equipped with push plate to automatically open doors
