Calligraphy: Modern Brush Calligraphy

Using this modern writing instrument you will first learn a basic cursive script with the monoline tool. Soon you will be making the same strokes with the brush markers and learning how to create beautiful thick and thin strokes with the application of pressure to the brush tool. As the day progresses you will be encouraged to make even more elegant letters as you learning about letter spacing and flourishes within words and short phrases. Learn your alphabet in this whole new way and begin to enjoy the art and craft of hand lettering. Using watercolours and artist brushes will be demonstrated. For your convenience, it is a good plan to bring a pencil, eraser, scissors and a ruler or small T-square to class. The instructor has some for use in class time. Additional supplies will be made available for in-class projects but basic writing instruments, practice paper and course handouts will be supplied.

Family Calligraphy: The Write Way (Ages 10+)

In this presentation sponsored by the Edmonton Calligraphic Society, you and your child will learn the basic strokes of an Italic alphabet and quickly transition those letterforms into cursive handwriting. The presentors will share and their intimate knowledge of lettering and writing and the 'Write Now' curriculum by Getty/Dubay. When you learn this alphabet, the letter shapes and slope are retained as the writer progresses from print to cursive (joined) handwriting. We believe this is the best way to build muscle memory and attain a cursive hand that is both practical, logical and legible. With no mirror-image letters, loops, curlicues and long entrance or exit strokes, this new way of writing suits our natural hand movements and results in a more legible handwriting style. All supplies are included and you will complete a small project within the class time.
