Household Travel Survey FAQ
The City of Edmonton conducts a Household Travel Survey every 10 years. This survey captures detailed travel, activity and demographic information from residents living in Edmonton and the region. The data collected provides important information to forecast future transportation needs for Edmonton and the region.
For the purposes of this survey, a household consists of the entire group of persons who live in one dwelling unit and share a kitchen. A dwelling unit could consist of a house, apartment or basement suite, townhouse, duplex, or mobile home, etc.
Households are randomly selected from within the City of Edmonton and surrounding region. Of the households invited to participate, 70% are in the City of Edmonton and 30% are in the surrounding region.
Advanis, a local professional research firm, has been contracted to collect the information for the survey. All information will be held strictly confidential and used only in combination with information provided from other households.
The survey will take place during November and December 2014. Invitation letters will be mailed or emailed out between November 24 and 26. All data collection will be completed by December 15.
The time it takes to complete a survey depends on your household size and amount of activities and traveling you do.
This is the tool you will use to record all of your activities and travel during a 24-hour period on your assigned travel day. Information requested in the diary is important for us to properly understand travel patterns.
Keeping the diary with you allows you to record each activity as it occurs and helps to reduce the chance of forgetting any activities or travel on your assigned survey day.
Each member of your household should fill out the Travel and Activity Diary forms for the 24-hour period of your assigned survey day. Travel should be recorded even if you are traveling with another member of the household; this also applies to household members who are unable to fill out their own diary (eg. babies and toddlers.)
It is the date each household has been given to record the activities and travel of all household members. It will be included in your survey package. Your assigned survey day will be one day during December 3- 9, 2014.
You will be assigned a day to record your travel when you register for the survey, however you will be given the option to choose another day if you are out of town for some or part of that day.
Counts are one way of checking the effectiveness of the current transportation system. The information gathered by this travel survey will be used to plan for new or improved transportation systems. This survey is the only option for collecting data that anticipates where users would like to go.
