Grierson Hill Bridge Rehabilitation - Closure Notice

On Saturday, February 18, the City of Edmonton will begin rehabilitaton work on the Grierson Hill Bridge. Due to the construction, Grierson Hill Bridge at the bottom of Grierson Hill Road, will be entirely closed to traffic from 6am on Saturday, February 18 until Fall 2012.

Drivers are advised to follow marked detour routes or use alternate routes such as Dawson Bridge, McDougall Hill, 105 Street, 106 Street and James MacDonald Bridge. Access to and from the Shaw Conference Centre from Grierson Hill Road will remain open.

About the Project

The City of Edmonton is moving forward on the completion of the rehabilitation of Grierson Hill Bridge, and the MacDonald Drive Pedestrian Underpass.

The Grierson Hill Bridge Rehabilitation will begin on Saturday, February 18, 2012 and is expected to be completed by Fall 2012.

The MacDonald Drive Pedestrian Underpass rehabilitation work will begin in the first week of April 2012 with completion expected in July 2012.

The final phase of this project, which includes rehabilitation to the Rossdale Road Bridge, will begin in 2013.

2012 Construction:

The Grierson Hill Bridge rehabilitation includes:

  • Bridge deck demolition and new bridge deck construction.
  • Pier column repairs.
  • Paving and new guardrail construction.

The MacDonald Drive Pedestrian Underpass rehabilitation includes:

  • Utility relocations and protection, pedestrian underpass concrete repairs, and paving.
  • Macdonald Drive adjacent to TELUS Plaza will be reduced to one lane of traffic for approximately 4 months.

Traffic Impacts:

  • Grierson Hill Road over the north access to the Low Level Bridge will be closed to traffic for approximately 7 months.
  • Macdonald Drive adjacent to TELUS Plaza will be reduced to one lane of traffic for approximately 4 months.

2013 Construction:

The Rossdale Bridge rehabilitation includes:

  • Bridge repairs including deck surface removal and new concrete overlay.
  • Paving and new guardrail construction.

Traffic Impacts:

  • Rossdale Road over McDougall Hill Road will be reduced to one lane of traffic for approximately 4 months.
