Yellowhead Trail Strategic Plan

About the Project

The City of Edmonton has completed a Strategic Plan for the development of Yellowhead Trail to become a freeway. This expansion is part of Edmonton’s Transportation Master Plan and will help to move goods and services more efficiently along this section of the Inner Ring Road.

Project Lifecycle - Strategy Phase

The proposed plan would improve traffic flow along Yellowhead Trail as traffic volumes continue to grow and would significantly improve safety at several high-collision locations.

Yellowhead Trail Corridor Plan

The recommended strategic plan will keep Yellowhead Trail as a 6-lane roadway, but upgrade it to a freeway while minimizing the impact on the surrounding developed areas as much as possible. The plan will include the closure of a number of intersections, addition of service roads in select areas, and the addition of a number of interchanges. The Transportation Bylaw has been amended by City Council to designate Yellowhead Trail as a proposed freeway.

An update was presented to the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee on October 9, 2012.  The update outlined the recommended long-term staging for improvements along Yellowhead Trail.

Currently, funding has not been approved for any improvements to Yellowhead Trail and as a result, timing for these improvements is unknown at this time.

Benefits

  • Uninterrupted travel in eastbound and westbound directions will reduce travel delays.
  • Reduction in collision rates.
  • Improved access through the use of interchanges.
  • Reduction in emissions.
  • Improved goods and service movement.

In addition to the closure of intersections, several new interchanges will be constructed over time.

Existing Interchanges New Interchanges
Fort Road (Modifications planned) 127 Street
St. Albert Trail (Modifications possible) 121 Street
Victoria Trail 149 Street
50 Street
82 Street
97 Street
156 Street

Property Impacts

Yellowhead Trail has mature and fully developed areas on both the north and south sides which have been a key consideration in developing the proposed strategy. Depending upon the scale of improvement within the corridor, some property acquisition will be required.
