Whitemud Drive Over 17 Street

About the Project

The City of Edmonton is constructing an overpass at Whitemud Drive over 17 Street. The new interchange will provide uninterrupted travel on Whitemud Drive between Anthony Henday Drive East and Anthony Henday Drive West. The project will also include improvements to 17 Street from 37A Avenue to approximately 400 meters north of Whitemud Drive.

The overpass will better accommodate high traffic volumes, improve vehicle and pedestrian safety, and reduce traffic delays.

Timeline

Construction will be completed in stages over the 2011 - 2013 construction seasons.

Stage 1: Overpass construction at 17 Street and associated Whitemud Drive improvements

Start – February 2011
Completion – Fall 2011

Stage 2: Improvements to 17 Street between 34 Avenue and 400m north of Whitemud Drive

Start – April 2012
Completion – July 2013

Project History

November 2012 - Construction Update

Completion of the portion of 17 Street, north of Whitemud Drive, is scheduled for July 2013. The remainder of the project is complete with some minor carry-over work still to be done on Whitemud Drive at the Transportation Utility Corridor (TUC).

October 2011 - Construction Update

The bridge work is moving forward and the project is still on schedule for a late fall 2011 opening.
The paving schedule for the bridge deck may be affected by the curing time required for the approach slabs and tie-ins. Since the material being used is weather sensitive, a contingency plan has been prepared should the temperature drop below what is required for proper curing and setting.

September 2011 - Construction Update

Construction of the new bridge on Whitemud Drive at 17 Street continues and is on schedule for completion on October 31, 2011.
The roadwork on Whitemud Drive has been finished with only the tie-ins for the bridge still to be completed.

June 2011 - Construction Update

The construction of the new bridge on Whitemud Drive at 17 Street is progressing well. A major milestone was met in June with the erection of the concrete girders. Along Whitemud Drive, roadwork is continuing on both sides of 17 Street.
