Scona Road Widening and 99 Street Rehabilitation - Project History

September 2012 - Construction Update for both Scona Road and 99 Street

The work scheduled for 99 Street and associated streets is now complete however landscaping is still in progress on the Scona Road portion of the project. Activities include tree planting, shrub bed construction, as well as seeding with topsoil and sod placement. This work will continue as weather permits with any carry-over work being scheduled for spring 2013.

March 2012 - Scona Road Update

Carry-over work for 2012 on Scona Road is to include the completion of masonry work on the noisewall, landscaping/tree planting, as well as any miscellaneous deficiency work.

Included in the 2012 construction will be the work required under the 98 Avenue bridges as well as a portion of Connors Road northbound towards the Low Level Bridge and James MacDonald Bridge limits along the east curb.

  • retaining wall installation
  • concrete curb, gutter and sidewalk removal and installation
  • grinding and re-surfacing of the existing roadway

 

Traffic disruptions will include single lane closures with the possibility of night or weekend closures due to grinding and paving.

March 2012 - 99 Street Update

Carry-over work for 2012 on the 99 Street project includes:

  • grinding and re-surfacing of Whyte Avenue intersection
  • removal and replacement of crosswalk channel on the west side of Whyte Avenue intersection
  • miscellaneous deficiency repairs along 99 Street from Saskatchewan Drive to 81 Avenue

 

Traffic disruptions to include localized single lane closures with the possibility of night or weekend closures due to grinding and paving at Whyte Avenue.

The 83 Avenue, 99 Street to 100 Street, work to be completed includes removal and replacement of curb and gutter, grinding and resurfacing of existing roadway, as well as completion of boulevard landscaping. This work will require the closure of 83 Avenue in order to complete.

November 2011 - Scona Road Update

  • All lanes on Scona Road and Connors Road are now open after the completion of Stage 3 construction just south of the Low Level Bridge.
  • Additional work will be ongoing (weather dependent), which includes the installation of railings and masonry work.
  • There will be some carry-over work occurring in 2012 including landscaping/tree planting and remaining masonry work on the noisewall as well as the rehabilitation on the Connors Road/Scona Road ramps.

November 2011 - 99 Street Update

  • The work required to complete this project is at an end for the 2011 construction season. In spring 2012 crews will continue with the remaining work required.
  • Some miscellaneous patching, landscaping and clean-up will be occurring before the site is closed for the winter.

September 2011 - Scona Road Update

  • The asphalt base paving between 99A Street and 94 Avenue was completed in August, as was the pouring of the curb and gutter northbound between 94 Avenue and Connors Road.
  • Asphalt paving between 94 Avenue and 92 Avenue, 99A Street, 92 Avenue and Saskatchewan Drive tentatively planned for late September.
  • Road base stabilization and gravel base portions 95% complete between 99A Street and Saskatchewan Drive. The only remaining reconstruction portion is located just south of 99A Street on the east side of Low Level Bridge (where traffic is currently operating).
  • Road removals, excavation and grading is approximately 90% complete for entire project.
  • Work is continuing on noisewall and retaining walls as well as the sidewalk and curb and gutter at 95 Avenue.
  • The architectural component (rundle stone masonry) has commenced on retaining walls.
  • EPCOR is completing its work on the streetlights and traffic signals and is expected to be complete by mid-September.
  • Project is still on schedule for completion in November and throughout September many key milestones will be reached.

September 2011 - 99 Street Update

East side of 99 Street from Saskatchewan Drive to 81 Avenue:

  • Concrete work is complete. Removals, grading and base lift of Asphalt complete to 82 Avenue.
  • Removals, grading and base roadwork from 82 Avenue to 81 Avenue scheduled for completion by late September with paving to follow.
  • EPCOR streetlight/signals work complete.

West side of 99 Street from Saskatchewan Drive to 81 Avenue:

  • Concrete work is complete to south of 89 Ave (not including 89 Avenue intersection) and was scheduled for completion to 88 Avenue by September long weekend.
  • Paving of Saskatchewan Drive to south of 90 Avenue by September 2nd. Removing and grading complete to 84 Avenue with gravel base placed to 85 Avenue.
  • EPCOR Technologies has completed approx. 98% of the new streetlight and signal work.
  • Current road closure for 99 Street is one lane only south bound from Saskatchewan Drive (92 Avenue) to 82 Avenue. Following completion of east side paving of base lift asphalt, southbound traffic will be diverted to the entire length of the east side of 99 Street project limits to accommodate construction of the west side.
  • For the duration of the project Transit will operate southbound only.

June 2011 - Scona Road Update

  • Over 200 piles have been drilled and poured for 3 retaining walls and 1 noise wall.
  • All utility relocations completed including 950m of new watermain.
  • The road removal, excavation, and grading is ongoing in the southbound direction.
  • Road base stabilization and gravel placement ongoing between 99A Street and 95 Avenue.
  • Drainage work is ongoing between 92 Avenue and 94 Avenue. Southbound drainage work is completed from just south of 99A St to 95 Avenue.
  • Over 10 days of rainfall for June have caused some delays in progress, however, the contractor will be making efforts to compensate for these delays.
  • The landscaping plan for Scona Road has been finalized and will feature the planting of new trees and ornamental shrubs as well as an attractive rundle stone veneer on the newly constructed retaining and noise walls.

June 2011 - 99 Street Update

  • The recent rainfall has caused delays in schedule, however roadwork, utility upgrades and street/signal light work is progressing steadily.
  • Most of the concrete work is complete on the east side of 99 Street, between 88 Avenue and 92 Avenue. The crews will now start on the section between 84 Avenue and 88 Avenue with base work and concrete to follow. The paving of 99 Street, between 89 Avenue and 92 Avenue, is expected to be complete in mid-July.

May 7, 2011 - Scona Road closure was completed

As part of the closure the following milestones were met:
  • Temporary Signal at Low Level Bridge/98 Avenue completed.
  • All paint lines completed on Connors Road, temporary cross-over, 98 Avenue, and 99A Street.
  • All road closed barricades in place with DMS signs warning motorists of closure.
  • Detour routes into Pioneers Cabin have been resurfaced and signs in place from Low Level Bridge to 99A Street.
  • 98 Street between 92 and 93 Avenue has been reconstructed for residential traffic detour.
  • Removal of signals at Connors/Scona intersection - free flow lane completed for Connors Road Northbound and Southbound.
  • Removal of signals at Saskatchewan Drive/Scona Road intersection - 4 way Stop completed.

We were very pleased with how the traffic operations staff handled the closure. They were well prepared and Police presence was also very helpful in directing motorists.
