Road Planning & Design
Expanding and improving Edmonton's transportation system involves ongoing long-term planning. The Transportation Master Plan is the framework that responds to the City of Edmonton's future transportation needs. It directs policies and gives guidance for funding projects and programs that work towards an integrated transportation network.
The planning of Edmonton's roadways follows a stringent set of guidelines which make up the project lifecycle. These plans help prepare for future development in the established and growth areas of the City. These are long term plans for new or upgraded transportation infrastructure, which may or may not advance to the Build phase for several years.

Projects in the Strategy Phase are defined by a major development plan that has been approved by City Council. The overall scope of the project has met the necessary criteria and is in keeping with the approved City Vision. Throughout this phase, strategic goals and objectives will be developed along with the best course of action to take and a view forward as to the positive impact that the project will have on future development.
Within the Concept Phase, all aspects of the project are developed and assessed. At this stage, the scope of the project is developed and concept plans are drawn up. This phase involves looking at all aspects of the project from the design and duration to the costing and overall impact to residents. Once the project plan has been completely developed, then a decision to go forward into the Design Phase will be made.
