Quesnell Bridge Construction Overview

Background Information

The Quesnell Bridge and Whitemud Drive Widening and Rehabilitation will enhance traffic flow and improve traffic safety. The completed project will provide:

  • 6 through lanes and 2 auxiliary lanes along Whitemud Drive between 149 Street and the Fox Drive overpass
  • A rehabilitated and widened Quesnell bridge
  • A reconstructed and widened Fox Drive overpass
  • 2 traffic lanes and a Transit Priority Lane on the Whitemud Drive / Fox Drive loop ramp
  • 149 Street off ramp widened to 2 lanes
  • Improved access to Fort Edmonton Park
  • A reconstructed retaining wall and new retaining walls
  • A modified multi-use trail system
  • A new storm water facility

Timeline and Budget

All construction activities are scheduled to be completed in November 2010. The project budget is $161 million.

2008 Construction Activities
In 2008 multiple construction activities will occur in preparation for Whitemud Drive widening and Quesnell Bridge rehabilitation in 2009 and 2010.

2009 Construction Activities
In 2009 the westbound lanes of Whitemud Drive will be widened. During this time, there will be 5 traffic lanes in full operation across the Quesnell Bridge.

2010 Construction Activities
In 2010 the eastbound lanes of Whitemud Drive will be widened. During this time, there will be 5 traffic lanes in full operation across the Quesnell Bridge.
