Groat Road Bridges
About the Project
The City of Edmonton is undertaking the rehabilitation of Groat Road Bridge over the North Saskatchewan River, Groat Road Bridge over Victoria Park Road, and Emily Murphy Park Road Bridge over Groat Road (Mayfair Bridge). This project also includes minor road work based on the Groat Road Interchange Concept Planning Project.
Groat Road Bridge over the North Saskatchewan River:
The Groat Road Bridge over the North Saskatchewan River was constructed in 1955. The last major rehabilitation of this bridge occurred in 1989-1990. The bridge is currently in need of another major rehabilitation, which is intended to extend the service life of the bridge by at least 50 years and improve the functionality of the existing sidewalk.
Groat Road Bridge over Victoria Park Road:
The Groat Road Bridge over Victoria Park Road was constructed in 1954. The bridge is generally in good condition but currently requires a wearing surface replacement, new deck joints, and other miscellaneous repairs.
Emily Murphy Park Road Bridge over Groat Road (Mayfair Bridge):
The Emily Murphy Park Road over Groat Road Bridge was constructed in 1963. The bridge is generally in good condition but requires some minor rehabilitation work such replacement of the east deck joint, and installation of a new bridge rail on the south curb. More substantial rehabilitation work, such as replacement of the deck wearing surface, is anticipated to be required in approximately 10 years.
The road work part of the project includes changes to the existing Groat Road signalized intersection, a new signalized intersection at River Valley Road, a ramp system adjacent to the Government House Park access, and changes to the Victoria Park Road westbound to Groat Road northbound merge lane. These changes are being made to improve safety, efficiency, and access for all modes of transportation in the area.
