53 Avenue Overpass

What's New

Bridge Traffic Changes Starting May 25

May 20, 2016 - On May 25 and May 26, from 8pm to 6am, traffic on Whitemud Drive at 53 Avenue will be reduced to a single lane in each direction approaching the 53 Avenue overpass. Motorists are advised to follow traffic control signs. The Terwillegar Drive northbound ramp to Whitemud Drive westbound will be completely closed to traffic to accommodate a concrete pour for the bridge deck. Please follow the marked detour route to 122 Street or to Fox Drive to access Whitemud Drive westbound.

Work is expected to continue until the summer of 2017. Traffic patterns will continue to change periodically to facilitate construction. Please obey all signs and speed reductions, or use other routes.

About the Project

The 53 Avenue over Whitemud Drive Overpass is a two span structure built in 1977 which carries six lanes (includes two turning lanes) of traffic over the freeway with sidewalks on both sides. Maintenance and rehabilitation of this structure is required to keep it in safe, functional condition for many more years.

Project Lifecycle - Build Phase

Where We Are

The rehabilitation design and crossover construction used for detouring traffic on Whitemud Drive were completed in 2015. The bridge construction is scheduled to take place during the 2016 construction season.

Construction will include, but not be limited to:

  • the removal and replacement of asphalt
  • replace deck, barriers and girders
  • replace deck joints and abutment bearings
  • temporary utility relocations

Construction will require traffic detours and a speed reduction on Whitemud Drive. Traffic disruptions can be expected starting late March 2016.

Project History
