50 Street Widening
About the Project
To accommodate growth and increased traffic flows expected from future developments along Anthony Henday to Ellerslie Road, 50 Street has been widened from 2 lanes to 4 lanes.
Construction included:
- 50 Street (Anthony Henday Drive to Ellerslie Road) widening to 4 urbanized lanes
- Ellerslie Road and 50 Street upgraded to urban intersection
- Upgraded Traffic Signals at Ellerslie Road and 50 Street Intersection

Timeline and Funding
Construction began in June 2011 and was completed in fall 2013.
The following were the tentative 2013 milestone dates for this project:
May 25, 2013
Paving Ellerslie Road, west side of 50 Street
June 15, 2013
Northeast pavement tie-in at TUC*
Started July 30 & Completed August 2
Ellerslie Road and 50 Street intersection paving
Started August 6 & Completed August 12
4th Avenue surface work
Started August 24 & Completed August 28
Grind and overlay of older portion of 50 Street
South of Ellerslie Rd, from intersection, will be completely closed for one day either August 26, 27, or 28.

The 50 Street Widening is funded and managed exclusively by an independent developer, United Communities Ltd., MLC, and engineering consultant, Stantec Consulting Ltd.
When an independent developer begins a residential or commercial project they also develop the roadways to accommodate any traffic impact from the future development. These projects are funded and managed exclusively by the developer. It is the City of Edmonton’s responsibility to ensure the developers are complying with the approved standards and specifications.
