142 Street Planning Study - Project History

Open House - April 16, 2015

A construction information session was held on Thursday, April 16, where City staff were available to discuss the construction procedures and roadway features for the 142 Street Rehabilitation scheduled to begin this year.

Preliminary Design

Presentation

The construction on this project is scheduled to begin in May 2015. Roadway construction is anticipated to take one year. Landscaping is tentatively scheduled to follow in 2016.

Construction will include:

  • Complete removal and replacement of the 4-lane roadway*
  • A new shared use path along the east side of the roadway*
  • New sidewalk connections and bus stops
  • New curb and gutter, catch basins, manhole covers, and drainage leads
  • Replacement of commercial accesses
  • Replacement of traffic signals and streetlighting
  • Addition of a new pedestrian / bus activated signal at the intersection of 124 Avenue (west)
  • Addition of curb ramps at all corners of the Yellowhead Trail intersection, to increase pedestrian connectivity
  • Landscaping as required

*The existing Woodcroft Power Substation at the northeast corner of 118 Avenue and 142 Street is situated close to the road. One southbound through-lane of traffic at this intersection will be eliminated in order to accommodate the shared use path on the east side of the roadway. North and south of 118 Avenue, the removal of the concrete median and realignment of some portions of curb and gutter will be necessary due to the lane reconfiguration.

Plans showing the roadway alignment will be available after the April information session.

Project Update - March 2015

Design work for the 142 Street Rehabilitation Project is complete. The roadway design process involved using the approved 142 Street “Concept Two” provided in the Concept Planning Study, and using Complete Streets Guidelines to accommodate all methods of travel, including cars, large trucks, cycling, walking, and transit.

June 2014 - City Council Approval

On Thursday, June 5, 2014 City Council's Transportation Committee recommended that Concept Two for the 142 Street Planning Study be forwarded to Council for approval. City Council approved the 142 Street Concept Two design on June 11, 2014.

City Planners had recommended that Concept Two be approved as it provided a balance between stakeholder input and City policy.

Concept Two includes:

  • A shared-use path between 142 Street and the EPCOR site
  • Two northbound lanes (same as today)
  • A shared-use path on the east side that meanders around trees
  • The potential for additional landscaping on the east side
  • A proposed new sign for northbound right turn onto Yellowhead
  • Two southbound lanes on 142 Street that narrow into one southbound lane through the 118 Avenue intersection
  • Sidewalk connections to bus stops on west side (not a continuous sidewalk)

To allow for the shared-use path to navigate between the EPCOR site located at the north-east side of the intersection and 142 Street, Transportation Committee also approved the removal of one lane of traffic just through the 118 Avenue intersection on the east side.

To review Concept Two in detail, please see the Meeting and Presentation Displays document.

Open House - May 7, 2014

The City of Edmonton held an open house on May 7, 2014 to present the 2 options for the long-term planning of 142 Street between 118 Avenue and Yellowhead Trail.

A lane reduction and modifications to the 118 Avenue and 142 Street intersection are being considered. If implemented, these changes may affect traffic flow in the area.
