137 Avenue Widening
About the Project
137 Avenue has been widened to six lanes from 136 Street to 156 Street. Construction began in 2008 and was completed in November 2011. This widening, which included an underpass at the CN tracks between 140 and 142 Street, has significantly improved the flow of traffic in the area.
Construction Included:
- Underpass at the CN Tracks.
- Widening to six lanes with a shared use path between 136 Street and 156 Street.
- Shared use path between 136 Street and 156 Street connecting to existing path at 170 Street.
- Permanent centre median.
- North curb lane including turning movements at St Albert Trail.
- Asphalt overlay with specialized mixes.
Project History
December 2011 – Project is now complete.
- The work required to widen 137 Avenue to 6 lanes between 136 Street and 156 Street is now complete.
October 2011 – Construction Update for section between 142 Street and 156 Street
- As of the end of September 2011, all surfacing and concrete, with the exception of some separate sidewalk and slab ons, has been completed making the roadway open to it's full operational width.
- Final work is continuing and it is anticipated that there will be the occasional single lane closures to complete concrete slab on islands and landscaping.
September 2011 - Construction Update
- Drainage work along 137 Avenue was completed by the end of August 2011.
- Grinding and paving of 137 Avenue westbound and St. Albert Trail, north and south of 137 Avenue, began on September 19, 2011.
July 2011 - Construction Update
- Underpass from 140 Street to 142 Street is complete.
- Concrete work at 142 Street and the final layer of asphalt was completed in June 2011 and included the centre median from west of 142 Street to 149 Street. The widened lanes have been paved and traffic will be shifted south shortly.
- Median work, north curb line, and asphalt work from 142 Street to 156 Street began on July 4 with completion scheduled for the end of September 2011.
March 26, 2008 - Public Information Session
A public information session was held at the Wellington Park Community League.
