About the Program

The City of Edmonton is committed to Building Great Neighbourhoods – the building blocks of a great city. Building Great Neighbourhoods is the framework that coordinates neighbourhood investments and construction activities undertaken by the City's Drainage and Transportation Services, and the Office of Great Neighbourhoods to renew and improve the livability of Edmonton's neighbourhoods and the lives of the people who live, work and visit the city. This includes the following programs:

The Neighbourhood Renewal Program outlines a cost effective, long-term plan to address the needs of Edmonton's neighbourhood roads. The program involves the renewal and rebuilding of roads, sidewalks and streetlights in existing neighbourhoods and collector roadways.

Neighbourhood Reconstruction is a form of neighbourhood renewal that involves complete reconstruction of transportation infrastructure within a neighbourhood.

Construction includes:

  • Roadway reconstruction
  • Street lighting upgrades
  • Sidewalk, curb and gutter reconstruction
Note: Alley renewal is not part of this project.

The Great Neighbourhoods Improvement Fund provides complimentary capital investments that are not covered under the neighbourhood drainage and transportation renewal investments. This is an opportunity to coordinate Great Neighbourhood work with neighbourhood reconstruction to maximize investment and increase the livability of a neighbourhood. As every neighbourhood is different, the investments made are unique to each neighbourhood.
