Bike Box Freqently Asked Questions
Answers to some of your questions on how bike boxes work.Motorists
- When the light is green: turn as normal ensuring you enter the correct driving lane on the intersecting roadway.
- When the light is amber or red: stop at the stop line behind the bike box. When the light turns green, allow the cyclists ahead of you to clear the bike box. You may then follow at an appropriate speed and distance, ensuring you enter the correct driving lane on the intersecting roadway.
Cyclists
- When the light is green: turn left as you would at any other intersection. Enter the left-turn travel lane or dismount your bicycle and use the pedestrian crosswalk.
- When the light is amber or red: enter the bike box from the bike lane and position yourself on the left side or at the centre of the bike box. When the light turns green, proceed left through the intersection, ensuring you enter the correct driving lane on the intersecting roadway.
116 Street at 87 Avenue was chosen for several reasons:
- The bike route turns east onto 87 Avenue at this location, creating the potential for a high number of cyclist left turns. The bike box is an intersection safety tool that assists cyclists and motorists with the left turn manoeuvre.
- The area has potential for high bicycle ridership as it is in close proximity to many University of Alberta facilities and residences.
- Cost savings were achieved through partnering with Windsor Park neighbourhood reconstruction in 2012-13.
The bike box is coloured to raise both cyclist and motorist awareness that special attention should be paid, and that all signs and pavement markings should be followed.
