2013 Neighbourhoods
About the Program
The City of Edmonton is Building Great Neighbourhoods. The Neighbourhood Renewal Program outlines a cost effective, long term strategic approach to renew and rebuild Edmonton’s roads, sidewalks, and street lights in existing neighbourhoods and collector roadways throughout Edmonton.

The types of neighbourhood renewal projects vary depending upon the state of infrastructure. These include:
- Reconstruction
- Overlay
- Preventive Maintenance
2013 Neighbourhood Reconstruction
Neighbourhood reconstruction is part of the Building Great Neighbourhoods initiative. Reconstruction candidates have poor sidewalk condition and fair to poor road condition. During reconstruction, roads are repaved, and sidewalks and streetlights are replaced.
In 2013, reconstruction will begin in the following five neighbourhoods:
Once a neighbourhood has been slated for Neighbourhood Renewal, meetings are arranged to address questions from the community and finalize designs.
Neighbourhood Renewal - Overlay
During overlay, roads are repaved and sidewalk panels treated to eliminate safety hazards. During construction, access to the area under construction is limited and parking restrictions are enforced. Prior to the start of work, a construction bulletin is sent outlining the work to be done and parking restrictions.
Neighbourhood Renewal - Preventive Maintenance
Preventive maintenance involves microsurfacing of the roads in which they are resealed with a thin asphalt surface. Depending on the scope of work, preventive maintenance may take between several days or several weeks to complete. Prior to the start of work, a construction bulletin will be sent out outlining the work to be done and parking restrictions.
