122 Avenue Collector Plan

Introduction

The City has initiated a Concept Planning Study for 122 Avenue between 107 Street and Fort Road as part of the City’s Collector Concept Planning program. The projects that make up this program are corridors identified through the Neighbourhood Renewal public involvement process that would benefit from further in-depth public engagement and analysis.

122 Avenue is an important east-west connection and transit corridor that provides access to commercial areas in the Fort Road area and residential neighbourhoods. 122 Avenue will also connect to the future Blatchford urban redevelopment and to the Metro Line LRT, once it is extended to the City’s Northwest limit. The intent of the study is to develop a new roadway configuration, which updates the corridor to meet the needs of current and future users. The speed limit is intended to remain the same.

About the Project

122 Avenue is currently a 2-lane ‘collector’ roadway with parking on either side. A Concept Plan will be developed for 122 Avenue between 107 Street and Fort Road prior to undergoing road reconstruction, scheduled for 2017. The intent is to update the roadway and to ensure road design consistency across the five neighbourhoods located along the corridor. Road reconstruction includes the complete removal and reconstruction of road surfaces, curbs and gutters, and streetlights.

An emphasis will be placed on function within the communities and efforts will be made to reduce speeding and shortcutting while accommodating the needs of motor vehicle traffic, transit, pedestrians and cyclists, as is possible within the roadway parameters. Through input from area residents and businesses, as well as area stakeholders, existing issues will be identified and neighbourhood priorities will be incorporated into the design, where possible.

Where We Are At Today

Public input is an important component of developing the Concept Plan. Initial information gathering will take place in May/June 2015 to capture public and stakeholder concerns and identify opportunities.

The Concept Plan is anticipated to be complete by early 2016, followed by Preliminary and Detailed Engineering design stages. Reconstruction of 122 Avenue is tentatively scheduled for 2017/2018.
