Transit Bylaw Changes – Effective January 1, 2012

Providing a safe, comfortable transit experience for all citizens is a priority for ETS.

In November 2011, ETS proposed amendments to the Conduct of Passengers Bylaw 8353, reflecting feedback collected from citizens and transit employees.

Edmonton City Council approved the amended bylaw which will be in effect starting January 1, 2012.

The changes are easier for customers and employees to understand and for Transit Peace Officers to enforce.  Overall, the changes are geared to enhancing the customer experience and reinforcing appropriate and courteous use of the public transit system.

In addition to the fine increases which were brought into effect earlier this year, the amendments include the following provisions:

  • Consumption of food and drink WILL BE ALLOWED on ETS buses and LRT provided that food and beverages are in containers designed for travel and under the control of the customer.
  • Customers using work/assistance animals aboard ETS or transporting animals in appropriate carriers will no longer have to pay an additional fare for the animal.
  • Customers harassing others or otherwise interfering with the comfort or convenience of others on ETS property can now be fined under the revised bylaw.
  • Spitting on ETS Property is now an offence under the new bylaw.
  • Customers will not be permitted to block aisles (on buses/trains) with items.

Refer to the complete amended Transit Bylaw.
