LRT (Light Rail Transit)

About Light Rail Transit
Light Rail Transit (LRT) is powered by electricity and carries over 92,000 passengers on an average day. The total line is 21 km long with a total of 15 stations.
Free Park & Ride is available at Clareview, Belvedere, Stadium, and Century Park LRT Stations.
Information is also available through BusLink at 780-496-1600, and inserting the 4 or 5 digit number from the LRT station where you want to catch the train or call Transit Information at 311.
Efficient
LRT is one of the fastest and safest ways to travel in Edmonton. Trains operate at a maximum speed of 70 km/h.
Affordable
The LRT can help you save money on fuel, parking, and vehicle maintenance. ETS transit pass customers also benefit from the federal transit pass tax credit.
Accessible
LRT offers special accessibility features for customers with mobility difficulties, including elevators, escalators, automatic doors, downtown pedway, hands-free emergency phones, and wheelchair accessible washrooms.
Environmentally Friendly
LRT trains operate on electricity, which can help reduce air pollution from vehicle emissions and green house gasses. A transit rider creates 65% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than an auto user for the same trip.

Old Model Light Rail Vehicles Upgrade
The original U2 vehicles are being refurbished to upgrade outdated systems and replacement parts. Three vehicles at a time are being retrofitted by Bombardier Transportation with project completion scheduled for December 2012. The U2 vehicles (total 37 vehicles) average 30 years of age and have never had a major overhaul. The upgrades will maximize the life of the U2, add 15-20 years of reliable service.
Information regarding LRT Mezzanine Retail Space
The Request for Information (RFI) has closed. ETS will be proceeding with a Request for Proposal.
The Every Day Way to longer LRT platforms
Two of the newer LRT stations are undergoing some platform modifications. The platforms at McKernan/Belgravia and Health Sciences stations are being extended by 23 metres so they can accommodate five-car trains.
Currently, ETS runs four-car trains. With the increase in ridership and the potential additions of new lines to the LRT network, we need the ability to carry more passengers per train.
The extensions have been made possible through the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund introduced by the Federal Government in 2009.
Construction is at one end of the platform only. There will be some disruptions to pedestrian movement, but the work should not interrupt LRT service or vehicle traffic on 114 Street. We expect to finish the project this fall.
