Seniors on the Go Travel Training Program

DATS is pleased to offer this summer program for a fifth year! Seniors on the Go application forms for 2012 will be available in May and charters start in June. Space is limited and interested groups are encouraged to apply early.

Goal

Seniors on the Go strives to ensure that Edmonton's senior citizens feel comfortable, confident, and safe using Edmonton Transit System (ETS).

Purpose

The City of Edmonton is committed to offering its citizens travel choices when planning their activities.  Being familiar with transportation options and services increases an individual's ability to remain independent in the community.  Seniors on the Go is a summer program that runs from June to August every year. Since 2007, this educational and interactive program has benefitted more than 4,000 people through over 60 residences, activity centres and seniors groups.

How does Seniors on the Go work?

There are 30 charters available on a first come, first served basis this summer from June - August. DATS' Seniors on the Go Coordinator will assist in planning and implementing an outing for 15 - 25 participants on a chartered, low-floor ETS bus to any destination within the City of Edmonton, whereupon the group will have some ‘free' time. Participants receive an overview on the various accessibility features of Edmonton's transit system, fare costs, how to plan trips on public transit, and information on safety and security.  Groups are able to participate free of charge, however any cost incurred at the destination of their choice is the responsibility of the participant.

Some destinations include:

  • West Edmonton Mall
  • Southgate Mall
  • Art Gallery of Alberta
  • Royal Alberta Museum
  • Muttart Conservatory
  • LRT Tour and Ride

Who is eligible to participate?

Seniors on the Go is offered on a group basis only to those who have reasonable transit service and the ability to travel independently.

How to apply

Seniors on the Go has limited bookings available and Edmonton's Disabled Adult Transit Service (DATS) encourages interested parties to submit their application as soon as possible.  If you would like more information or an application for this program, please contact Tymothy Jaddock, Seniors on the Go Coordinator, at 780-944-5593.
