Bikes on Buses
Wow, it's that easy!
Bike racks are available on the Routes 1, 4, 8, 9, 30, 32, 82, 111, 128, 139 and 180. The bike racks are mounted on the front of all low floor buses travelling these routes, including the articulated (accordion) buses on the Route 9.
Using the rack is easy. Loading and unloading your bike takes approximately 20 seconds. Easy-to-follow instructions are printed directly on the rack. The bike rack holds two bicycles. Space on the bike rack is available on a first-come first-served basis.
If the bike rack is full, you will have to wait for the next available bus. Bicycles are not allowed inside the bus for safety reasons. Bicycles are loaded and unloaded individually from the curb side of the bus. You pay the regular ETS fare while your bike rides free.
ETS personnel may, at any time, refuse access to cyclists due to unsafe conditions. ETS is not responsible for damages incurred or caused by or to bicycles on ETS property. Buses without bike racks may occasionally travel these routes due to unforeseen circumstances.
Easy On!
Before the bus arrives, get your bike ready for loading by removing any loose objects like water bottles and pumps that could fall off while the bus is in motion. Indicate to the operator from the curb that you will be loading your bike.
1. Squeeze handle up to release latch; then fold down the bike rack.
2. Lift your bike onto the bike rack, fitting the tires into the wheel slots. Each slot is labeled for front and rear wheels. Please use the outside slot first.
3. Pull the support arm out and up over the top of the front tire to secure it in place.
Board the bus and pay your fare. Your bike rides free! Sit as close to the front as possible, to keep your bike in view and let ETS do the driving!

Cyclists are responsible for properly securing their own bikes to the rack. For safety reasons, the operator may not leave the bus to help load or unload bikes.
Easy Off!
Before you reach your stop, tell the operator you will be unloading your bike, then exit by the front door.
1. Pull the support arm out and down over the tire to release it.
2. Lift your bike out of the bike rack.
3. Fold up the rack to the locked position,if the rack is empty and no one else is waiting to load their bike.
Please allow passengers with bicycles who are leaving the bus to remove their bicycles first, before loading another bike.
Remember to wear a helmet when riding your bike.
More about Bikes on Buses
The expansion of the Bikes on Buses Program in 2002 was made possible by the generous donation of 23 bicycle racks from the Edmonton Bicycle Commuters Society. Alberta Ecotrust, Environment Canada and Health Canada provided funding to the Edmonton Bicycle Commuters. This provided ETS with an excellent opportunity to expand the Bikes on Buses to a good east/west connection for cyclists - Routes 1 and 4. The Bikes on Buses program started on the Route 9 in 1996, which provides a good north/south connection for cyclists. The program was initiated with assistance from Councillor Tooker Gomberg.
