University and Grandin LRT Station Escalators
|
Status Update: Three escalators at Grandin LRT Station remain out of service. They are expected to be completed within the next two weeks. The escalator repairs took longer than anticipated and we thank you for your patience. |
Escalators in University and Grandin LRT Stations are out of service for major maintenance. During our regularly scheduled contractor maintenance inspections, cracks were discovered in a number of the stairs of the escalators. This is a safety issue. As a result, the escalators were shut down for inspection and stair replacement.
The number of stairs required for replacement is more than the stock currently available in the city. We are working with our contractor to expedite the order for stairs. They are manufactured in the US.
The cracks are due to fatigue and age of the escalators. They were installed in 1992 so they’re over 20 years old. Escalator lifespan is approximately 30 years. University is one of the most heavily used LRT stations with approximately 30,000 passengers moving through the station on a typical weekday.
Elevators and stairs are available for customer access.
We apologize for this major inconvenience. We are working as quickly as possible to get the escalators back in service.
