Walkability Strategy Project

Project Overview

In the spring of 2008, The Walkable Edmonton Committee hired a consulting team from Stantec Consulting, Glatting Jackson, and the Project for Public Spaces to assist in developing a comprehensive Walkability Strategy to guide the work of improving walkability in Edmonton. Funding for the project was from a collaboration of City Departments and Alberta Health Services.

Walkable Strategy Project Terms of Reference

The Walkability Strategy is directed by the work of Transforming Edmonton and links to other strategic initiatives such as the Smart Choices Program.

Edmonton's City Council recently passed an Active Transportation Policy, C544. The work of carrying out the Policy is largely defined by: the Sidewalk Strategy, which deals with pedestrian infrastructure; the Walkability Strategy, which deals with improving many other aspects of walkability and the Bicycle Transportation Plan Update which deals with both the infrastructure and other supports to cycling.  Together, these strategies will help Edmonton take big steps toward promoting active transportation in Edmonton.

The consultants work has been completed and is captured in the Proposed Walkability Strategy. The Walkable Edmonton Committee accepted this report and has since developed the Walk Edmonton Report which is a summary of the recommendations and also further refines the timelines and funding required to carry out the work.

The Walk Edmonton Report was approved by the City's Leadership Team and were presented for information to the Transportation and Infrastructure Services Committee of City Council in the summer of 2010.  The newly formed Active Transportation Committee is working with the lead City Departments to implement the recommendations of the Walk Edmonton Report.

At the December 2008 Stakeholder Workshop participants were asked to identify any elements missing from the Table of Contents. They were also asked to identify the main barriers that they felt were highest priorities to address.
