Bicycle Equipment
Here you can learn more about the equipment cyclist must have by law in Edmonton, and other optional equipment which we recommend to make your ride safer and more enjoyable.
Helmets
Cyclists aged 17 and younger are required by law to wear an approved bicycle helmet. This includes children in trailers and on trail-a-bikes. Adults are also encouraged to wear a helmet.
Wearing a helmet is the best way you can avoid injury while cycling. While fewer that 10 per cent of all accidents involve head injuries, these injuries cause over 75 per cent of cycling deaths.
Helmets must meet ANSI, Snell or CSA standards to provide enough protection. A properly fitting helmet:
- Is level from front to back, and sits about an inch above your eyebrows.
- Fits snugly. Adjust the straps so that the 'V' is just below you ears and you can just fit two fingers between your chin and the strap.
Bicycles
Bicycles are required to have by law:
- A bell
- Brakes that will lock wheels on dry, clean, level pavement
- A white headlamp, a red tail lamp and a red rear reflector when cycling at night
Recommended Gear
- Brightly-coloured clothing, so you are easier to see
- Padded cycling gloves to protect your hands
- Glasses to keep dust and debris out of your eyes
- A flag on your trailer
It's the Law to:
- Obey Traffic Signs and Signals
- Ride in Single File
- Keep Your Bike in Good Repair
- Ring that Bell/Horn
- One Person Per Bike (unless the bike is equipped to handle two persons)
- Use Lights at Night
