Mill Woods Double Barrel Trunk Sewer Upgrade
Current Status
Tunnelling along 23 Avenue is in progress but the contractor is currently behind their baseline schedule due to the tunnel boring machine arriving later than expected and lower than anticipated productivity during the initial portion of tunneling.
The contactor will begin working double shifts from 7 am to 3 am Monday - Saturday to help address current delays and to prevent further delay. This new double shift is scheduled to take place for three weeks beginning on Monday June 20 until Saturday July 9.
Although this change will delay the start of the 85 Street connection work by approximately two months, the overall project is still able to be completed by the anticipated spring 2017 completion date.
What is the Mill Woods Double Barrel project?
The Mill Woods Double Barrel project involves installing approximately 3.3 kilometres of new storm trunk sewers and then connecting existing smaller storm sewers to the new trunks. When completed, these new sewers will provide increased capacity in both the sanitary and storm trunk sewers for Mill Woods communities.
There are four major legs of this sewer project (see map):
- 30 Avenue from Gateway Boulevard to 91 Street (completed and in service)
- 91 Street between 23 Avenue to 30 Avenue (completed but not in service)
- 23 Avenue between 91 Street and 85 Street (under construction)
- 85 Street between 23 Avenue and Knottwood Road (completed but not in service)
Once the storm trunk is completed and the existing smaller storm sewers are tied in to the trunk, the new system will be fully operational.
What is involved with this project?
These trunk sewers are located at depths ranging from 16 - 30 metres below ground and the sewer pipes range from 2.3 metres to 3.5 metres high. There are three major components to the project: tunnel excavation, installation of new pipes and shafts, and connections to existing sewer pipes. Construction crews make every effort to complete this necessary work with as little disruption to traffic flow as possible.
The project is scheduled for completion in spring of 2017.
