City Flood Prevention Strategies FAQs

Because I have had too many claims, I can no longer get flood insurance. Will the City be speaking to insurance companies about this?

No. The City does not deal directly with insurance companies on private matters. If homeowners are having difficulties with their insurance provider, they are advised to contact the Insurance Bureau of Canada.

Does the City track flooding from previous years? If so, what happens to this data?

The City maintains records of previous flood reports. The compiled information is used to identify areas significantly impacted by flooding and to address specific areas that require drainage improvements.

Do plugged pipes or catchbasins cause most flooding?

A plugged sewer can cause flooding problems, but this is not a common occurrence. The engineering studies currently underway will review sewer operations and maintenance in the flooded areas and will identify whether any sewers were plugged. Catchbasins get plugged due to snow, ice cover, hail, leaves and other debris. The City clears catchbasins when plugs are noticed and reported, though realistically it cannot ensure all catchbasins are clear at all times.

What is the primary function of a catchbasin?

Catchbasins carry stormwater runoff from the surface to the underground storm sewer system, where the sewers then transport the water to the North Saskatchewan River or its tributaries. Catchbasins also intercept grit (such as rocks, sand and gravel), and keep such materials from entering and plugging the storm sewer system. There is a sump at the bottom of each catchbasin to collect heavy grit materials, while stormwater flows into the main sewer line. City crews inspect catchbasin sumps and use vacuum trucks to remove the collected debris.
