Mayor's Awards banner

The Mayor's Awards recognizes those who make significant contributions to Edmonton's livability for all, and shines a spot light on innovations in accessibility.

Four award categories - Employers, Ewen Nelson Award for Self-Advocacy, Outstanding Service, and Accessible Homes and Buildings - recognize individuals, organizations and businesses in Edmonton who use creative methods to ensure the dignity and inclusion of persons with disabilities.

Accessible Homes and Buildings

This award recognzes project teams or individuals, who through their vision and creative initiatives, build accessible homes and buildings in Edmonton.

Nomination Instructions

Provide all information supporting why your nominee should receive this award including relevant facts not covered by the following:

  1. Provide all information that is important to support why your nominee/nominees should receive this award including relevant facts not covered by the following questions.
  2. Provide a brief introduction to the project (identify size, scope, intended user group, etc.)
  3. Explain how the renovation or construction elements impact people with disabilities, that led to a more accessible home or building?
  4. Explain how the renovation or construction includes elements that exceed minimum code requirements of the Alberta Building Code (i.e. use of barrier free design guide).
  5.  Explain how universal design principles were seamlessly integrated into the overall aesthetics of the environment.
  6. If the nominee consulted with potential user groups with disabilities during the design phase, was any feedback/outcomes of the consultation from persons with disabilities incorporated?
  7. Explain how the renovation or construction addresses the areas outlined in the ABSPD Checklist for Accessibility and Universal Design in Architecture (please include completed checklist).
  8.  Is the building or home used by everyone?
  9. Is there any other information relevant to your submission that you would like to include in this nomination?

Employers

This award honours employers, businesses or organizations that have provided paid employment or volunteer position(s) for disabled persons.

Provide all information supporting why your nominee should receive this award including relevant facts not covered by the following:

  1. Describe what motivated the employer to hire a person with a disability.
  2. Describe the position including hours, tasks, and benefits.
  3. Describe if or how the employer supports and enables the employee to adapt and adjust to job duties.
  4. Describe the mechanisms for employee recognition, such as through wage increases, performance evaluations and performance feedback.
  5. What does the employer do to educate others within the organization on disability and accessibility issues?
  6. What does the employer do to encourage an inclusive work environment and how has everyone benefited?

Nomination Instructions - Volunteer

Provide all information supporting why your nominee should receive this award including relevant facts not covered by the following:

  1. Describe what motivated the employer to provide a volunteer position to a person with a disability.
  2. Describe the volunteer position, including hours and tasks.
  3. Does the employer provide a written description of volunteer duties?
  4. Describe how the employer accommodates the volunteer, including support provided, physical accommodations, adjustments to job duties and other accommodations.
  5. Describe how the volunteer is recognized within the organization such as through performance feedback, annual recognition or inclusion in special events.
  6. What does the employer do to educate others within the organization on disability and accessibility issues?
  7. What does the employer do do encourage an inclusive work environment and how has the volunteer and others benefited?

Ewen Nelson Award for Self-Advocacy

This award recognizes the contributions of individuals with a disability that have been a self-advocate in the development of services and supports for citizens with disabilities.

Provide all information supporting why your nominee should receive this award including relevant facts not covered by the following:

  1. How has the nominee advocated for improved services for people with disabilities living in Edmonton such as through employment-related work, volunteerism, writing, speaking or other activities?
  2. How has the nominee shown leadership or has worked successfully with others to improve services for people with disabilities living in Edmonton?
  3. Explain how this nominee shares with others what they have learned about successful self-advocacy.
  4. Explain how the nominee’s self-advocacy has contributed to the increased participation and inclusion of people with disabilities in the community.
  5. Explain if and how the nominee’s contributions have influenced a positive change in the disability community. Examples include inspiring government policy changes or the creation of greater awareness by the public or business of the issues to do with disability.

Outstanding Service

This award recognizes individuals, organizations or businesses that, through outstanding service and creative initiatives, provide accessible service to persons with disabilities.

  4. Explain if and how the nominee demonstrated creativity or innovation in providing the service. 
  5. Describe the impact and benefits of the service provided.
  6. Describe how the nominee treats those they serve with dignity and respect. Please give specific examples.
