Alberta's Regulated Weeds
Below you can find information about all the weeds regulated in the Alberta Weed Control Act. The information includes how these weeds can be identified and why they are regulated.
To find a regulated weed faster, all weeds are separated into categories based on their regulatory designation, their growth form and the colour of their flower.
Weeds by Regulatory Designation
Prohibited Weeds
Prohibited noxious weeds must be destroyed, meaning all growing parts need to be killed or the plant's reproductive mechanisms need to be rendered non-viable.
Noxious Weeds
Noxious weeds must be controlled, meaning their growth or spread needs to be prevented.
Regulated Weeds by Growth Form
Flowering Weeds
Herbs or forbs with colourful flowers regulated under the Alberta Weed Control Act.
Trees & Shrubs
Trees and shrubs have a woody stem and are usually taller than flowering weeds. There are a few trees and shrubs regulated under the Alberta Weed Control Act.
Grass-Like Weeds
Grass-like weeds have long and narrow leaves and usually green, brown or straw-coloured flowers. This group includes all real grasses but also plants which resemble grasses such as sedges.
Regulated Weeds by Flower Colour
The colour of the flower is one of the most recognizable characteristics of many plants; but be aware that some plants can have flowers of different colours or colour variations. For example, among plants with usually purple flowers, single plants with white flowers are fairly frequent. Therefore, some weed species are listed in more than one colour category.
White Flowers
Weeds with at least some white in their flowers.
Pink, Purple, or Red Flowers
Weeds with at least some pink, purple or red in their flowers.
Yellow Flowers
Weeds with at least some yellow in their flowers.
Other Flowers
Plants with Green Flowers
Plants with Blue Flowers
Plants with Orange Flowers
