Hospital Stillborn Memorial Program
The hospitals in the Edmonton Area in conjunction with various funeral homes and cemeteries offer services for the interment of stillborn and newborn babies who passed away prior to going home from the hospital. Every three months, all the babies are transported together to the funeral home where the cemetery arrangements are made with either the Edmonton Catholic Cemeteries or the City of Edmonton Cemeteries.
Funeral homes and cemeteries rotate in a specific schedule to handle these burials at NO charge to the families.
On years ending with odd numbers, the burials are conducted by Edmonton Catholic Cemeteries located at St. Joachim’s Cemetery (105 Avenue & 115 Street)
On years ending with even numbers the burials are conducted by the City of Edmonton Cemeteries located at Northern Lights Cemetery, 15203 Campbell Road (156 Street & St Albert Trail)
If a family chooses the Hospital Stillborn Memorial Program, the family would arrange to have the baby’s remains to be released to the hospital.
The hospital will then arrange to have the baby included on the next scheduled interment date.
Each year the hosting funeral home and cemetery offers a memorial service and dedication that all family members are encouraged to attend.
The cemetery also provides a large bronze marker that has room for multiple plaques. This allows parents who wish to place a small individual bronze scroll with the name of the child and year of birth/death.
City of Edmonton Cemeteries
The Staff at municipal cemeteries would like to express our sympathies if you find yourself in need of these services.
The City of Edmonton is honoured to be part of the Hospital Stillborn Memorial Program. The Memorial Service and Interment Ceremony are both heartfelt and respectful to the babies and their grieving families.
If a family prefers a private service with and individual grave location, the City of Edmonton provides a variety of options at a reasonable cost.
One option is a private grave in the dedicated baby/children’s sections in one of our seven cemeteries.
Private Family Service
At the time of the baby’s passing the parents may decline the Hospital Stillborn Memorial Program and may contact a funeral home and cemetery to arrange for the funeral and cemetery services on their own.
The funeral home will offer a basic service, pickup, a suitable casket or container and transport of the deceased to the cemetery. Depending on the options chosen, fees may apply.
The cemetery will offer a place of burial in a section set aside for infants in any of its cemeteries. The space, a liner to protect the casket and the opening and closing of the grave will be provided to the family for a minimal cost.
The baby is in its own resting place. If the family chooses they may order a single marker in remembrance. This space may be used in the future for the cremation burial of family members in accordance with the specific cemetery regulations and costs.

Tree of Memories
Celebrate the life of a loved one this holiday season with the Tree of Memories
Location: Beechmount & Mount Pleasant Cemeteries
Dates: November 15 to Jan 15
Beechmount Cemetery invites members from the community to visit the Tree of Memories between November 15 and January 15.
Thousands of beautiful blue lights will shine from this large, magnificent tree, symbolizing the spirits and memories of those who have gone before us.
Members of the public are invited to take part in the annual tradition of placing an ornament on the tree to remember their loved ones. This small act of remembrance can create a new way of celebrating the life of the person who has died.
To place an ornament on the tree, visit Beechmount during the daylight hours between November 15 and December 25 and place an ornament on the tree in the location you desire.
As we cannot guarantee that the wintry season conditions will be kind, community members may wish to refrain from using ornaments which are too valuable or sentimental.
Please retrieve the ornament before January 15 if you wish to keep it to place on your own tree in the future.
