Open Source Street Art Pilot Program
On March 31, 2016, the Open Source Street Art (OSSA) pilot project will end and will not be continued. Many factors were included in the decision to close the walls including the project's sustainability and outcomes.
Capital City Clean Up in partnership with the Edmonton Arts Council (EAC) will instead, focus on transitioning the Tirecraft free-wall location (10021 82 Avenue) to a permanent or transitory mural location. Discussions and planning will continue with the EAC, Old Strathcona Business Association and the businesses in the area with hopes to make the alley around the Tirecraft location an 'Art Alley' that could have several murals. This vision sees permanent and transitory murals created in cooperation with local and visiting artists, giving street artists and other community members the ability to continue leaving their mark.
Transitioning free-walls that can be painted over at any time, to transitory murals that are changed on an annual basis, is expected to cut down on the amount of graffiti vandalism found on these spaces and in the surrounding community. It is also expected to significantly cut down clean-up and monitoring costs.
Plans for transitioning the Tweddle Place location are still to be determined.
The City of Edmonton is committed to promoting safer, cleaner communities by reducing and preventing graffiti vandalism.
