Business Supporting Community
Capital City Clean Up’s Business Supporting Community (BSC) initiative offers Edmonton-area companies a unique opportunity to fight litter while supporting local non-profit groups. In 2015, these groups raised more than $83,000 as part of BSC.
Participating businesses pay organizations for litter cleanup as a unique fundraising opportunity. Schools and non-profit groups can provide an enthusiastic volunteer force.
From May to August, these groups are paid a weekly rate to clean up litter around a one-block area of the company’s site. Businesses may also choose to have the group clean up another area, such as a playground, seniors’ residence or neighbourhood park.
Application Process
Businesses
Sign up your business as a contributing business until May 30, 2016.
Non-profits
Non-profit applications are now closed.
Contribution of the City
The City coordinates all invoicing of participating businesses. It supplies litter baskets within a one-block radius of each location, and regularly maintains and empties them. The City also supplies non-profit groups with a cleaning kit, which includes gloves, garbage bags and safety vests.
Contribution of Non-profit Groups
Groups plan and coordinate volunteer litter pickup one hour each week for 16 weeks. Teams must have a minimum of two people. Groups are responsible for transporting members to and from collection areas and ensuring that the cleanups are completed. Cleanups include the parking lots of participating businesses, but not locations under construction.
All Capital City Clean Up volunteers must follow our Volunteer Safety guidelines
Contribution of Businesses
Businesses using not-for-profit organizations and schools for litter cleanup pay the associations through the City of Edmonton for the service at a mutually agreed amount.
