Drainage Education

Utility Services offers public education programs for school children and for adults.

The school program is entitled Treat it Right!® and is designed to provide teachers with teachers’ guides that will reach specific outcomes in the Alberta Education Program of Studies for science and mathematics in grades 4, 5, 7, and 8. The programs also link to chemistry, biology, language arts, social studies, health, and geography as appropriate to the topic, content, and grade level.

By learning about what not to put down the storm and wastewater systems and about new ways of building and developing urban areas, students acquire knowledge and information about how humans impact the environment.

Each teacher’s guide is composed of a series of four lessons, including readings, exercises, activities, games, and take home activities.

Included in the Treat it Right!® program are two face-to-face programs: the Treat it Right!® Puppet Show (Grades 2 and 4) and the Treat it Right!® Constructed Wetland Field Trip (Grade 5). These programs further enhance the goal of teaching children about what not to put down the storm and wastewater systems.

Adult Programs

The adult education program focuses on the issue of pouring fats, oils, and grease (FOG) into the sanitary sewage system. Store it, Don’t Pour it! encourages Edmontonians to dispose of FOG by putting it into a tin and then, once the tin is full, putting it in the garbage. This simple step can save residents time and money.

Another program for Edmontonians relates to flood prevention. Flood prevention program teaches residents about what they can do to prevent flooding on their property.
