Education Property Tax
Each year, the Alberta Government determines the budget requirement for provincial education purposes.
As part of that process, the government determines how much of the total education budget will be paid through the property assessment and taxation system in the province. The total assessment of all property in the City of Edmonton is used as the basis for determining the City's share of the total education property tax requirement (otherwise known as the education property tax requisition).
The City of Edmonton, in accordance with provincial legislation, is required to collect the required funds through the assessment and property tax system to pay the City's share of the total provincial education property tax bill.
The assessment of your property is used to determine your share of the funds needed by the City to pay the City's share of the total provincial education property tax requisition.
In 2012, about 65 per cent of the average residential property tax bill in Edmonton goes to the City to fund municipal services, with the remaining 35 per cent going to the Alberta government in payment of the provincial education tax requisition.
