First Place Home Ownership Program
First-time homebuyers in Edmonton are getting a break. An innovative, made-in-Edmonton program is putting up to 1,000 new townhomes on the market and offering Edmontonians a wider range of housing options.
The First-time Homebuyers Program is transforming 20 surplus and vacant school sites in established city neighbourhoods into potential locations for new townhomes. These houses only go on the original land set aside
The program responds to the pressures of growth:
It makes home ownership attainable for first-time buyers with moderate incomes. Typical households qualifying for this program include professionals such as police officers, nurses, teachers, trades and technical workers, with a working partner.
It demonstrates fiscal responsibility. Building homes in established neighbourhoods uses existing infrastructure, saving construction costs and reducing urban sprawl.
It makes productive use of the original building areas of undeveloped school sites that have been vacant for many years and declared surplus by the school boards.
