Secondary Suite Grants

The five-year Secondary Suites grant program was a component of Cornerstones: Edmonton’s Plan for Affordable Housing (2006-2011). 

Designed to increase safe, affordable housing options for lower income households in Edmonton, the grant program encouraged the upgrading and addition of suites in compliance with health and safety standards.

In total, Cornerstones has helped Council create an anticipated 553 secondary suites and over 3,300 safe and affordable homes for citizens.

Applications that were received before February 23, 2012 are still being considered but are not guaranteed to receive funding approval.

The City of Edmonton will only accept new applications for Cornerstones secondary suites grants to develop 25 suites in the Phase 1 Oxford subdivision.

Information will be posted on the City of Edmonton Land Sales page when available.

No other applications will be accepted as the program funds have been fully utilized.

Future grant funding initiatives

While the initial five-year Cornerstones grant program for secondary suites is fully spent, City Administration brought recommendations for another similar grant program to City Council on April 11, 2012. Program staff will continue to follow up on and complete existing files in 2012, and then implement a new secondary suite program in 2013.
