Leaders in Training

Get the Leading Edge!

The Leaders in Training (L.I.T.) program gives youth ages 13-17 years the chance to develop leadership skills and gain valuable experience while having fun outdoors. Give back to your community and earn leadership or volunteer hours for your school, too. Program runs May-August annually.

Volunteer to be an L.I.T. and work with recreation leaders to run summer programs for children. Choose from the following:

Playground Programs
Join the fun at a playground near you. As a playground L.I.T. you get a chance to participate in a variety of activities, from games and crafts to drama, music, sports, and more. Gain experience working with 6-12 year olds in a fun, flexible setting.

Registered Programs
Work out of a community facility with children ages 3-12 years in a week long themed program including sports, drama, and science. Those in registered programs also go on plenty of field trips.

After an interview and training, you can volunteer for as little as two weeks or as many as seven weeks.

To volunteer, complete an application which will be available online in mid April.

The L.I.T. Process

Step 1. Apply and Pay $20 Application Fee

Complete the 2013 L.I.T. application and return it to the City of Edmonton Circle Square office or bring it to an open house. Pay online, through 311 or at any rec facility before coming to an open house.

Step 2. Attend an Open House

You will need to provide two (2) pieces of government-issued identification for a security check (one should be photo identification):

  • Driver's license
  • Learner's permit
  • Birth certificate
  • Alberta Health Care card
  • Passport
  • Immigration ID card
  • Citizenship card
  • Indian Status card
  • Permanent reident card
  • Firearms card

You will have a short interview and choose your preferred volunteer sites or programs. Bring a list of weeks when you will be available to help your selection process.

Step 3. Train

You must attend an L.I.T. training session - 2 days for new L.I.Ts; 2 days for returning L.I.T.s. .

Step 4. Volunteer

Your commitment is to volunteer at your chosen sites or programs for a minimum of two weeks. You can volunteer for more than two programs and for as long as seven weeks.

L.I.T. Coordinators

There are three L.I.T. coordinators who will be your guides this summer. You can reach them at 780-944-7413.
